GAME NOTES: The New Mexico State Aggies try to rebound from a disappointing loss as they entertain the Hawaii Warriors in Western Athletic Conference action at the Pan American Center.
NMSU had been battling Utah State for first place in the WAC standings last week, but the team then turned in a miserable 83-64 loss to Fresno State on the road on Thursday night, snapping a three-game win streak in the process. As a result, the Aggies are now tied with Louisiana Tech for second place in the WAC at 8-3.
As for the Warriors, a team that has yet to win a single game on the road in 2009-10, they are just one loss out of last place in the conference standings, sporting a 2-9 record at the moment. Hawaii was in Ruston on Saturday evening and suffered a 66-60 loss to Louisiana Tech, the squad's sixth straight setback and the eighth in nine tries.
NMSU won the first meeting of the season between these two teams last month at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu by a mere two points in the final moments. With that victory, the Aggies took a 10-2 advantage in the all-time series.
Hiram Thompson scored a team-best 14 points and handed out five assists for the Warriors, but he was also charged with seven of the unit's 16 turnovers in the loss at Louisiana Tech two nights ago. Roderick Flemings added 13 points and nine boards, but his mere 3-of-12 shooting from the floor was less than expected, while Brandon Adams accounted for 12 points and six rebounds for a squad that got only five points from the reserves and shot a collective 12- of-24 at the free-throw line. Free-throw shooting has been a sore spot at times for the Warriors, the team shooting just 66.8 percent at the stripe over the course of 24 games. Flemings (15.3 ppg) has been a huge concern at the stripe because he has made just 62.8 percent of his attempts and for someone who handles the ball as much as he does it has to be a real issue in close games down the stretch. Flemings is currently the only active player scoring in double figures for Hawaii.
Jahmar Young and Jonathan Gibson both tallied 14 points for the Aggies on Thursday night, but the squad was completely dominated by Fresno State at the Save Mart Center. Wendell McKines added 13 points and Gordo Castillo 10 as the squad not only suffered 18 turnovers but also shot a pitiful 9-of-26 at the free-throw line. Generally the Aggies are somewhat solid at the free-throw line, hitting on 70.5 percent of their chances, but clearly there was an issue for the team last week and it needs to be addressed in order for the squad to move forward. Young leads the group in scoring with his 21.0 ppg and Gibson checks in with 18.1 ppg, the duo also combining for 131 of the squad's 327 assists on the campaign as well. NMSU is one of the top scoring teams in the WAC with 77.5 ppg, but the program is also one of the weakest defensive groups with 78.6 ppg allowed as well.
Playing on the road, combined with an abbreviated roster, is a prescription for defeat for the Warriors yet again.
