GAME NOTES: Ohio Valley Conference action will take place this evening when the Austin Peay Governors host the Jacksonville State Gamecocks at the Winfield Dunn Center.
The Gamecocks fell to 7-8 in conference action with a 75-67 setback to Murray State in their last matchup. It was the third loss in the last four games for Jacksonville State, which is a meager 1-8 on the road this season.
As for the Govs, they have suffered two straight losses on the heels of a four-game winning streak. The most recent setback for APSU was a 76-67 loss to Tennessee State, which dropped the Governors to just 8-6 in league play.
The Governors have won 12 of the 13 meetings against Jacksonville State, and that includes a thrilling, 66-64 overtime victory earlier this season.
The Gamecocks have been decent at the offensive end of the court this season and head into this matchup netting 71.9 ppg. Trenton Marshall is pacing the team with 18.3 ppg, and that goes along with 5.4 rpg, 60 assists and 44 steals. Nick Murphy is contributing 14.6 ppg and a team-best 7.0 rpg, while Jeremy Bynum is posting 10.8 ppg. The Gamecocks struggled the last time they were on the floor, as the team scored just 67 points in a loss to Murray State. JSU shot 41.9 percent from the field, but finished just 5-of-15 from long range. Murphy led the way with 24 points, and also posted seven rebounds and five assists. Marshall added 17 points and eight boards, while Amadou Mbodji tallied 11 points.
Nothing went right for APSU in its recent loss to Tennessee State, as the Govs shot just 38.6 percent from the field. APSU finished just 6-of-24 from long range, and made only 17-of-29 attempts from the charity stripe. Wes Channels led the way in the loss with 20 points, while Anthony Campbell tallied 17 points, to go along with eight rebounds. John Fraley also had a strong showing, as the big man finished with a double-double of 15 points and 18 rebounds. Channels has been the top player on the floor for APSU, as the guard is leading the team with 16.2 ppg. Channels is also posting 4.3 rpg and 3.2 apg, while Campbell comes into this matchup contributing 15.6 ppg and 5.6 rpg.
The Governors are coming off two straight losses, but look for them to get back in the win column this evening against Jacksonville State.
