GAME NOTES: The top-ranked Kansas Jayhawks have made their way to College Station for a Big 12 Conference battle with the Texas A&M Aggies.
On Saturday, Kansas defeated Iowa State by a 73-59 final, giving head coach Bill Self his 400th career victory. The Jayhawks, who are 23-1 overall, have won nine straight since suffering their only loss of the season to Tennessee. They are 9-0 against Big 12 competition and 6-1 in true road games.
As for Texas A&M, it has posted four consecutive wins to move to 18-6 overall and 7-3 in conference. On Saturday, the Aggies showed a great deal of toughness in posting a 67-55 road win over Texas Tech. The team has reason to be supremely confident tonight despite the opposition's prowess, as Texas A&M is a perfect 13-0 at home in 2009-10.
Kansas owns a commanding 14-1 series advantage over Texas A&M, which includes a 5-0 mark at Reed Arena.
There are four double-digit scorers in the lineup for Kansas, which is putting up 83.3 ppg on 49 percent shooting from the field, including 40.1 percent from three-point range. The Jayhawks have been tremendous at the defensive end as well, allowing just 62.5 ppg on 36.5 percent field goal efficiency. The fact that Kansas is ripping down 7.8 rpg more than the opposition on average has been a key to the team's success. Sherron Collins leads the top-ranked squad with 15.4 ppg, and Xavier Henry adds 13.1 ppg. Marcus Morris pitches in 13.0 ppg, and Cole Aldrich rounds out the group with 11.6 ppg and 10.3 rpg. Aldrich has also blocked 87 shots, more than the rest of the team combined. In the 14- point victory over Iowa State on Saturday, Henry tallied 16 points, while Collins, Aldrich and Marcus Morris all had 11 points. Aldrich ripped down 12 boards and blocked three shots, while Morris finished with 10 rebounds. Kansas held Iowa State to 33.3 percent field goal efficiency.
Donald Sloan has started all 24 games for Texas A&M and is averaging 18.3 ppg this season. Bryan Davis adds 10.4 points and 7.6 rebounds per game while shooting 53.1 percent from the field. The Aggies are generating 73.4 ppg while holding opponents to 65.6 ppg on 41.2 percent shooting from the field. In the recent victory over Texas Tech, A&M clearly benefited from a 40-29 rebounding advantage, including a 13-8 edge on the offensive glass. The Aggies did turn the ball over 21 times, but they played strong enough in other areas to overcome the mistakes. B.J. Holmes had 18 points in the victory, and Sloan tallied 14. As for Davis, he finished with 13 points and 16 boards from his center position.
There is no doubt that Kansas is the better team in this matchup. The Jayhawks will jump on top of A&M early and hold off a late charge.
