GAME NOTES: Instate foes come together in Jersey City tonight, as the Saint Peter's Peacocks entertain the Rider Broncs in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference bout at the Yanitelli Center.
The Peacocks were slated to be in action this past Friday, but weather conditions pushed that contest against Loyola Maryland back to Wednesday. That means SPC has been out of play since February 7th, when it edged Canisius, 73-72, in overtime. It was the second win in three games for the Peacocks, who are in the hunt for second place at 9-5 in MAAC action.
Rider, on the other hand, was in play just this past Friday and it suffered a 79-75 overtime loss to Fairfield. The defeat was the second in three games, as the Broncs dipped to 14-13 overall and just 7-8 within the conference.
As far as the all-time series goes, SPC grabbed a 23-22 lead following a 77-66 victory in the first encounter of this season.
The Broncs were outscored at the foul line, 24-12, including 5-0 in overtime, as they were dealt a 79-75 setback by Fairfield on Friday. Rider shot a solid 51.9 percent from the floor, including 9-of-15 from downtown, but its 16 turnovers led to 23 points for the Stags. Ryan Thompson guided the team in the loss with 18 points, while Justin Robinson scored 15. On the campaign, Thompson heads Rider in scoring at 16.2 ppg and he is also collecting 5.2 rpg. Robinson follows with 13.3 ppg and he is a 44.5 percent three-point shooter. Novar Gadson adds 11.2 ppg and a team-high 7.7 rpg to the mix, while Mike Ringgold contributes 10.8 ppg and 6.8 rpg.
The Peacocks have really been effective at the defensive end of the court this season, holding foes to just 60.9 ppg and only 37.2 percent shooting from the field. Offensively, the team is guided by Wesley Jenkins, who turns in 14.3 ppg, to go with 5.2 rpg. Nick Leon is next in order at 12.9 ppg, while Ryan Bacon puts forth 9.9 ppg and a team-best 9.1 rpg. In the squad's prior outing, Jenkins registered a double-double with 25 points and 10 boards to lift SPC over Canisius in overtime. Leon pitched in with 16 points for the Peacocks, who held Canisius to a dismal 33.9 percent shooting performance from the floor.
SPC is clearly the better defensive team and its ability to slow down challengers will make the difference in the end tonight.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
