Western Carolina (18-8) at UNC Greensboro (5-19)

GAME NOTES: The Western Carolina Catamounts try to end a three-game slide tonight as they visit the UNC Greensboro Spartans for a Southern Conference bout.

Western Carolina is currently second in the North Division of the SoCon with a record of 8-6 and trailing only Appalachian State entering the week. However, the Catamounts have fallen off the pace of late by dropping three straight decisions. On Saturday the squad was thwarted by Davidson at home in a 75-72 final.

As for the Spartans, a team that has won just three home games so far in 2009-10, they too are suffering through a three-game slide at the moment, but in their case they've won a total of only three games since the first week of December. Out of action for the last week, the most recent game for the Spartans was a 75-69 setback versus Appalachian State last Monday.

The Catamounts have taken three straight meetings against UNCG, the most recent of those being a 79-69 triumph at home last month. With its current streak, WCU has moved out to an 18-15 advantage in the all-time series.

Western Carolina led by as many as eight points in the first half, but after the break the team shot just 34.4 percent from the floor and that allowed Davidson to fight back and grab the win at the Ramsey Center. In a game that saw nine ties and seven lead changes, Harouna Mutombo led the way for WCU with 15 points, eight rebounds and four assists, followed by Brandon Giles and Jake Robinson with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Robinson, who has been a reserve in every games this season, leads the unit in scoring overall with his 12.2 ppg, but it is Giles who is pacing the Catamounts in conference outings with his 14.4 ppg. Both players are shooting better than 75 percent at the free- throw line, but as a group the Catamounts are hitting a mere 64.7 percent at the charity stripe at the moment.

Kyle Randall knocked down 7-of-11 shots form the floor to come up with his 18 points, but he and the Spartans were merely heading for yet another loss last week in their meeting with Appalachian State. Mikko Koivisto came up with 16 points, although his accuracy from the floor was a mere 5-of-16 and his three- point shooting showed up at a 3-of-13 clip. Ben Stywall ended with seven points and 12 rebounds, but one has to wonder what the outcome would have been had he made at least one of his six field goal attempts. Stywall is the only double-digit scorer on the roster currently with his 14.0 ppg, leading the way on the glass as well with 10.5 rpg. Unfortunately, the team as a whole is shooting just 37.8 percent from the field and 28.1 percent behind the three- point line, en route to a meager 63.4 ppg.

The Spartans might just be what the doctor ordered for Western Carolina in order for the Catamounts to get back into the win column. For most other teams being at home might give them an edge, but UNCG doesn't have that luxury.
