GAME NOTES: Two teams with the same record meet up in Tampa tonight, as the South Florida Bulls host the Cincinnati Bearcats in Big East action at the Sun Dome.
The Bulls are returning from a three-game trip that didn't end so well. After stunning nationally-ranked Georgetown to kick off the trip, USF was defeated at Notre Dame and most recently Marquette, 63-52, on Saturday. The Bulls had won four straight prior to the recent skid, but could still play their way into the NCAA Tournament with a strong finish.
As for the Bearcats, they are in a similar situation with a 15-9 record, although they sit one game up on USF in the Big East standings at 6-6. On Saturday, the team captured a much needed 60-48 victory at Connecticut. The win snapped a four-game road losing skid.
Cincinnati holds a commanding 21-6 lead in the all-time series with USF and that includes a 78-70 victory in the first meeting of the season last month.
The Bearcats forced 16 turnovers and held UConn to a miserable 34.6 percent shooting performance from the floor in a 60-48 win over the weekend. Cincinnati also dominated the boards, 46-32, including a 19-12 edge on the offensive glass. Lance Stephenson led the way with 14 points and five boards, while Deonta Vaughn had 10 points and four helpers. On the season, Stephenson tops the roster in scoring at 12.0 ppg and he is also pulling in 5.2 rpg. Vaughn checks in with 11.5 ppg and a team-high 3.5 apg, while Yancy Gates adds 10.3 ppg and a team-best 6.5 rpg to the rotation.
The Bulls made just 35.0 percent of their attempts from the floor and only 4- of-20 from long range, as they were downed by Marquette over the weekend. The poor shooting was simply too much to overcome even though USF held a 42-30 advantage on the boards. Dominique Jones guided the team in defeat with 16 points and nine boards, while Jarrid Famous registered a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Augustus Gilchrist also made his return after missing two months with an ankle sprain and he had seven points and four boards in 23 minutes of action off the bench. It was a positive return for Gilchrist, who should provide a nice boost considering he was averaging 18.7 ppg and 7.3 rpg prior to the injury. Jones though, is still the go-to-guy for this club and one of the top players in the Big East, averaging 21.6 ppg, 6.3 rpg and 4.2 apg for the season. Famous is another option for USF and he produces 11.6 ppg and a team-best 7.8 rpg.
USF is no longer a walkover in the Big East, and the Bulls should prevail behind Jones and company in a key game tonight.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
