GAME NOTES: A couple of teams battling for positioning in the Colonial Athletic Association standings meet tonight in Richmond, as the Drexel Dragons pay a visit to the Virginia Commonwealth Rams.
Heading into this week the Dragons were one of five teams already with double- digit CAA wins to their credit, sporting a 10-5 mark that had them tied with William & Mary for fourth place. Drexel is coming off a 68-60 win over the Delaware Blue Hens at home on Saturday, the team's third win in the last four outings.
As for the Rams, a team that has lost just once in 13 games at home this season, they suffered their second straight loss on Saturday with an unexpected 76-71 setback at James Madison. As a result, VCU has lost back-to- back games for just the second time this season and is 9-6 in league action.
Drexel won the first meeting of the season between these two programs with a 75-72 victory in Philadelphia the first week of January. Because of that result, the all-time series now favors VCU by a count of 9-6.
In a game that experienced nine ties and just as many lead changes over the weekend, Jamie Harris took control of the meeting against Delaware and delivered with a game-high 21 points for the Dragons in the eight-point home win. Gerald Colds added 13 points and Kevin Phillip nine and five rebounds off the bench as the team went ahead without Chris Fouch who is suffering from a shoulder injury and may not see action against VCU tonight. Fouch, the leading three-point producer for the Dragons, had been coming on strong in recent weeks and is in fact second on the team in scoring with 10.7 ppg, even though he has come off the bench in all 26 games in which he has played. Harris leads the way overall with his 14.7 ppg and is also tops in the passing department with 97 dishes. The Dragons are scoring just 64 ppg this season, but at least the defense is holding opponents to a mere 62.4 ppg at the same time.
VCU shot a staggering 64 percent from the field in the first half, but then the team went south with just 3-of-16 from three-point range for the game and a total of 22 turnovers, allowing James Madison to capture the shocking win in Harrisonburg. Larry Sanders tried to keep the team in the mix with his 15 points and game-high 14 rebounds, helping to provide the Rams with a commanding 45-26 edge on the glass. Joey Rodriguez added 14 points, Jamie Skeen 12 and Ed Nixon 11 off the bench. In the last four games the Rams have had a different leading scorer each time out, which could indicate that the squad is flexible or inconsistent. Sanders seems to be the only safe bet for the squad with his 14.9 ppg and 9.0 rpg, but of which lead the Rams. With 56 of the team's 90 blocked shots, he's also more than carrying his own weight in that department. Rodriguez (12.1 ppg) is not only a significant scorer in his own right, his 145 assists against only 60 turnovers means he is one of the premier passers in both the CAA and the nation right now.
If Fouch is unable to go for the Dragons tonight, the visitors will be at even more of a disadvantage. As long as Sanders comes to play he should have his way with Drexel in the paint and thus bring the win home for the Rams.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
