GAME NOTES: The Michigan Wolverines will try to take the season series from the Iowa Hawkeyes tonight, as the Big Ten foes do battle at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
The Wolverines enter the contest on a winning note, as they notched a 71-63 victory at Minnesota on Thursday. The triumph ended a short two-game slide and pushed Michigan to 12-12 overall and 5-7 within the conference.
Iowa meanwhile, suffered a 63-40 loss at nationally-ranked Purdue this past Saturday. It marked the fifth loss in six games for the Hawkeyes, who are now 9-17 overall and 3-10 in the Big Ten.
The Wolverines defeated Iowa, 60-46, in the first meeting of the season, extending their lead in the all-time series to 85-57. Michigan has also taken five of the last six encounters in the rivalry.
Michigan connected on 50.0 percent of its attempts from the floor and 7-of-14 from long range, as it knocked off Minnesota last week. DeShawn Sims headed the charge with 27 points and seven rebounds, while Manny Harris tallied 20 points and seven assists. On the season, Harris leads the squad in scoring at 18.4 ppg and he is also grabbing 6.3 rpg and dishing off a team-high 4.2 apg. Sims forms a solid one-two punch with Harris, as he brings 17.7 ppg and a team-best 7.5 rpg to the mix.
The Hawkeyes shot a horrific 29.8 percent from the floor, including a poor 7- of-24 showing from beyond the arc, as they were easily handled by Purdue over the weekend. Cully Payne guided the team in the loss with 11 points and six assists, while Jarryd Cole chipped in with 10 points. Matt Gatens, though, had an off game, as he was held to just three points on 1-of-10 field goals. Despite the output, Gatens stills leads the team in scoring (11.8 ppg), to go with 4.4 rpg and 3.3 apg. He however, is the lone player averaging in double figures for an Iowa club that is managing just 60.9 ppg.
Behind the duo of Harris and Sims, look for Michigan to complete the season sweep of Iowa tonight.
