GAME NOTES: The Nevada Wolf Pack shoot for their first three-game win streak in almost two months as they entertain the Fresno State Bulldogs in a Western Athletic Conference battle at the Lawlor Events Center in Reno.
The Pack are coming off an 88-80 overtime victory against Boise State on Saturday, giving the squad back-to-back wins and three triumphs in the last four outings. The squad is now 7-4 in league play, compared to Fresno State which settles in at an even 6-6 against the rest of the WAC.
Also on Saturday, the Bulldogs came out on the losing end of a 68-59 final versus Idaho, which means FSU was swept by the Vandals in the two regular- season meetings. The decision also snapped a brief two-game win streak for Fresno State.
The Wolf Pack leads the all-time series with Fresno State by a count of 44-36, although it was the Bulldogs who picked up an 87-77 win at the Save Mart Center in the first meeting of the season last month.
Sylvester Seay registered a double-double with his 14 points and 11 rebounds, but the Bulldogs shot only 5-of-21 behind the three-point line and 12-of-20 at the charity stripe versus Idaho at home. Mike Ladd and Greg Smith contributed with 13 and 12 points, respectively, while Paul George added 12 points, five rebounds and four assists, but he also struggled from three-point range (2- of-9) in the outing. George, who has returned from injury, leads the Bulldogs in both scoring and rebounding thus far with averages of 17.4 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, while Seay checks in with 15.3 ppg and 6.0 rpg as well. Smith (12.3 ppg, 6.6 rpg) stands as one of the most accurate shooters in the country this late in the season with his 59 percent effort from the field, which is actually better than his 58.5 percent at the free-throw line.
Luke Babbitt paced four players in double figures for the Wolf Pack with his team-best 27 points, but he had a mere four rebounds and still Nevada came away with the overtime win against Boise State at home. Armon Johnson stepped up with 24 points and seven assists, followed by Joey Shaw who was the one with the double-double consisting of 16 points and 12 boards for the squad. Dario Hunt tacked on 10 points and nine rebounds of his own as the team survived just 4-of-16 shooting behind the three-point line. In conference games Babbitt, who is playing close to 39 minutes per game, is averaging 23.7 ppg and 9.5 rpg to lead the program, shooting not only 54 percent from the floor but also 50 percent behind the three-point line and 88.6 percent at the free-throw line which makes him a very unusual performer for his stature. Johnson (16.0 ppg, 68 assists) and Brandon Fields (13.1 ppg) have also been consistent producers versus WAC foes this season.
In the first meeting of the season between these two squads, the Bulldogs managed to win even though they were without Paul George, so one would have to think FSU has just as good of a chance to capture a victory on the road tonight as well.
