GAME NOTES: In a game that was rescheduled due to a leak in the roof at the Gentry Center on February 2nd, will finally take place this evening, as the Jacksonville State Gamecocks invade Nashville to take on the Tennessee State Tigers in Ohio Valley Conference action.
The Gamecocks have dropped two straight games and four of their last five overall, including an 83-63 rout at the hands of Austin Peay just two days ago. With the loss to the Governors, JSU has fallen to 7-9 in conference play.
The Tigers are even farther down the conference ladder at a mere 4-11. However, the team has played its best basketball of late, bringing a season- high three-game win streak into this game. TSU was also in action just two days ago, outlasting Tennessee Tech in a double-overtime marathon, 109-102.
These two teams met back on January 21st. The Gamecocks took an 8-7 advantage in the all-time series with an 85-67 victory in that game.
The Gamecocks are averaging 71.5 ppg this year and getting it done on a decent .444 shooting. The team boasts of a trio of productive scorers in Trenton Marshall, Nick Murphy and Jeremy Bynum. Marshall is the best of the bunch not only on the team, but the conference for that matter, pacing the OVC with a solid 17.7 ppg. Murphy adds 14.4 ppg to the cause and is the team's top rebounder at 6.9 caroms per outing. Bynum is a lethal three-point shooter (.433) and adds 10.6 ppg to the cause. Marshall and Bynum have formed a solid one-two punch from beyond the arc, combining for 109 of the team's 165 three- pointers to date. The Gamecocks were unable to keep pace with Austin Peay on Monday, as the team shot a mere .353 from the floor, including 7-of-27 from behind the arc (.259). John Barnes and Dominique Shellman led the way with 13 points apiece. Murphy chipped in with 10, but Marshall struggled big time, hitting just 1-of-10 shots from the floor to finish with three points.
The numbers on the season are not very good for Tennessee State, as the team has collected just seven victories, while averaging 67.4 ppg on a mere .405 shooting. The defense has been suspect as well, allowing 74.9 ppg, as foes are shooting a generous .489 from the field. it certainly hasn't helped that leading scorer Josh Sain (13.7 ppg) out due to disciplinary reasons since early February. Jacquan Nobles (11.1 ppg) and Robert Covington (10.9 ppg) have done their best to pick up the slack. It took some extra time, but the Tigers erupted for 109 points in a win over Tennessee Tech on Monday. Six players reached double figures for the Tigers, led by Covington and Jeremiah Crutcher who poured in 24 points apiece. Wil Peters added 16 points to the cause, followed by Tashan Fredrick (13 pts), Nobles (12 pts) and Martell Buie (11 pts). The Tigers pulled down an amazing 50 rebounds in the game, with double- digit efforts from Covington (12 rebs) and Fredrick (10 rebs).
The Gamecocks won rather easily against the Tigers a few weeks ago, but the momentum lies with Tennessee State here.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
