GAME NOTES: The top team in the West Division of the Sun Belt Conference will take the floor this evening when Arkansas State battles the UL-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns in a league bout at the Cajundome.
The last time the Red Wolves played, the team pushed its league mark to 10-4 on the season with a 69-52 victory over UL-Monroe. It was the fourth win in the last six games for Arkansas State, which is just 5-7 on the road this season.
As for the Cajuns, they fell to 8-6 in conference action with a 67-65 loss to South Alabama this past Saturday. It was the second consecutive loss for UL- Lafayette, which is a mediocre 8-4 at the Cajundome this year.
The Cajuns own a commanding, 38-22 lead over ASU in the all-time series, but the Red Wolves chipped away at their deficit with a 62-60 victory over ULL earlier this season.
The Red Wolves didn't put up a gaudy scoring output, but the team still managed to grab a convincing victory over UL-Monroe. Arkansas State shot 52.0 percent in the matchup and that included a 7-of-14 clip from behind the arc. Martavius Adams led the way for ASU, as the forward posted 18 points and seven rebounds, while Brandon Reed added 14 points. Reed has been the top player on the floor for Arkansas State throughout most of the season, as the guard is posting 15.0 ppg. Adams has also played well and comes into this game with 11.2 ppg and a team-best 7.0 rpg.
The Cajuns have also failed to light up scoreboards, as the team is netting just 69.4 ppg. Tyren Johnson is currently leading the way with 17.8 ppg, 8.4 rpg, 80 assists and 40 blocks, while Chris Gradnigo and Randell Daigle are posting 14.7 and 11.4 ppg, respectively. The last time the Cajuns were on the floor the team suffered a tough two-point setback to South Alabama. UL- Lafayette shot 44.6 percent from the field in the setback, while Johnson led the way with 30 points. Gradnigo was the only other player in double figures, as he finished with 19 points, to go along with eight rebounds.
The Cajuns have suffered some tough losses this season, but they have enjoyed success against ASU in the past and should continue to do so this evening in front of a home crowd.
