GAME NOTES: A showdown in the Sunshine State will take place this evening, when the FIU Golden Panthers host the Florida Atlantic Owls in a Sun Belt Conference tussle at US Century Bank Arena.
The last time the Owls were on the floor the team grabbed a 76-72 victory over UL-Lafayette. The win snapped a two-game slide for Florida Atlantic, which is 9-5 in conference action.
The Golden Panthers have been de-clawed over the past couple of weeks and head into this matchup with a five-game losing streak. The last time FIU was on the floor the team suffered an 81-78 setback to Troy. The loss to the Trojans dropped the Golden Panthers to 4-11 in Sun Belt play.
Earlier this season the Owls grabbed a convincing, 106-88 decision over FIU. Despite the loss, the Golden Panthers till own a 14-10 edge over FAU in the all-time series.
The Owls have been solid at the offensive end of the court this season, as the team is netting 74.7 ppg. Greg Gantt is pacing the team with 15.8 ppg, while Raymond Taylor heads into this matchup with 14.4 ppg, and 152 assists. The last time FAU was in action the team grabbed a four-point win over UL- Lafayette. In the victory, the team shot 53.6 percent from the floor and also made 6-of-12 attempts from behind the arc. Gantt led the way in the win with 23 points, while Brett Royster tallied a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds. Sanchez Hughley and Alex Tucker posted 13 and 12 points, respectively, while Taylor tallied 10 points.
The Golden Panthers have struggled to find consistency this season, and are currently producing just 68.1 ppg. Marvin Roberts has been the best player on the floor for FIU, as the forward is netting 16.1 ppg, to go along with 5.0 rpg. The last time the Golden Panthers were on the floor the team scored 78 points, but still suffered a loss to Troy. Despite the setback the Golden Panthers shot 48.3 percent from the floor and were paced by Roberts, who poured in 27 points and also grabbed seven rebounds. Phil Gary and Stephon Weaver posted 12 and 11 points, respectively, while JC Otero added a double- double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Owls pounded FIU earlier this season, and even though the Golden Panthers are home for this matchup look for Florida Atlantic to earn another victory in league play.
