GAME NOTES: The La Salle Explorers will attempt to halt a four-game losing streak this evening as they take on the Dayton Flyers in Atlantic 10 conference action.
Last Sunday, La Salle played poorly at the defensive end in a 103-82 loss to Duquesne on the road. The Explorers, who are now 11-13 overall and 3-7 in league action, own a 4-6 mark in true road games.
As for Dayton, it carried a three-game win streak and a wealth of confidence into last Saturday's matchup with Saint Louis on the road. Unfortunately, that double-overtime affair resulted in a heart-breaking 68-65 setback. The Flyers, who are 17-7 overall and 6-4 in league play, are undoubtedly happy to return home for tonight's clash, as they are 12-1 in their own building this season.
Dayton owns a 21-13 series advantage over La Salle, which includes a 63-61 decision over the Explorers in the lone meeting a year ago.
La Salle was certainly shorthanded against Duquesne last time out, as Kimmani Barrett and Yves Mekongo both missed the game due to injury. Mekongo may very well miss the rest of the season with a broken finger, while Barrett's status for tonight's tilt is unclear. Rodney Green poured in 27 points against the Dukes on 11-of-22 shooting, and he also ripped down nine rebounds. Aaric Murray and Steve Weingarten added 13 points apiece, and Jerrell Williams posted 10 points. Those efforts weren't good enough to avoid defeat for La Salle, unfortunately, as the team suffered a 28-18 deficit in points from the foul line and turned the ball over 28 times. Those negatives overshadowed a 53-33 rebounding advantage. Green is generating 18.5 ppg this season for the Explorers, who are netting 71.6 ppg while allowing 72.9 ppg to foes.
Dayton is scoring 70.4 ppg this season while allowing 61.8 ppg to opponents on 39.6 percent shooting. The Flyers are also a strong rebounding team, ripping down nearly seven more rebounds per game than opponents. Chris Wright is one of only two double-digit scorers in the fold for the Flyers, as he is posting 14.8 ppg on 53.4 percent shooting from the field to go along with 7.3 rpg. Chris Johnson, who is tops with 7.7 rpg, checks in with 12.3 ppg. Both Wright and Devin Searcy scored 16 points for Dayton against Saint Louis in the recent clash, but the Flyers' shooting got progressively worse as the game advanced. A 45-31 rebounding advantage was overshadowed by 16 turnovers and a 15-10 deficit in points from the foul line.
Dayton clearly plays its best ball at home and is facing a La Salle team that has forgotten how to win. The Explorers also have injury issues, making the outcome of this tilt easy to predict.
