Western Carolina (19-8) at The Citadel (14-12)

GAME NOTES: The Western Carolina Catamounts continue to chase after the top spot in the North Division of the Southern Conference as they challenge The Citadel Bulldogs tonight in Charleston, South Carolina.

The Catamounts managed to put an end to a three-game slide on Monday night when they slipped by a lethargic UNC Greensboro program on the road, 75-70. The victory pushed WCU to 9-6 in league play, but still it trails Appalachian State in the division standings.

Over in the South Division, The Citadel is in the second half of the standings, even though the program has an 8-6 mark at the moment. The Bulldogs are enjoying a hot streak that has brought them four straight wins, a total that took the previous 12 outings to achieve. Last Saturday, the Bulldogs captured a 77-72 win over Elon on the road.

The Bulldogs enter this meeting with a 31-26 advantage in the all-time series with Western Carolina.

Western Carolina led by as many as 13 points late in the second half three nights ago, but the squad still had to hold on for the five-point win at UNC Greensboro. Brandon Giles accounted for a team-best 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Richie Gordon logged 11 points and five boards for the visitors. Harouna Mutombo chipped in with eight points, 10 rebounds and three assists and Kendall Russell another nine points and nine boards in a reserve role. Giles, who has fouled out of two conference games this season, leads the team in scoring when playing the other schools in the SoCon with his 14.7 ppg, making good on an even 40 percent of his three-point tries. Jake Robinson, who has been coming off the bench for the entire season, is a 41.7 percent shooter beyond the arc as he contributes 11.2 ppg for a team that is generating a solid 75.8 ppg in league play.

The Bulldogs went from shooting 43.5 percent from the field in the first half of their meeting with Elon to a sizzling 62.5 percent in the second half, giving the visitors the strength to pull away and take the five-point win over the weekend. Cameron Wells finished with a double-double consisting of 20 points and 12 rebounds, adding four assists and a couple of steals as well, while Harrison DuPont and Austin Dahn checked in with 18 and 16 points, respectively, for a squad that nearly let one slip away as they shot only 20- of-34 at the free-throw line. Wells is the primary contributor on offense this season with his 17.7 ppg, shooting 85.8 percent at the free-throw line, but just 11-of-50 beyond the arc over the course of 26 games. The better option for the Bulldogs out on the perimeter is Zach Urbanus who has made 73-of-172 (.424) and is the second-leading scorer on the roster with his 11.1 ppg. The team is netting just 61.5 ppg at the moment, but that tends to be alright considering opponents are averaging a mere 59.7 ppg.

As long as the Catamounts can set the pace in this meeting, even though it is on the road, WCU should still have the upper hand to take care of the Bulldogs.
