GAME NOTES: The Palestra is one of college basketball's most storied arenas, and it will be the site of tonight's Ivy League tussle between the Brown Bears and the Penn Quakers.
Brown has lost six of its last seven games to fall to 8-17 overall and 2-6 in league action. The Bears dropped an 81-67 decision to Harvard last Saturday and carry a 3-9 record in true road games into this evening's tilt.
As for Penn, it has suffered back-to-back losses to fall to 4-17 overall and 3-4 in conference. On Tuesday, the Quakers were knocked off by rival Princeton to fall to 1-8 at home, hard to believe for a program with such a tremendous history of success.
Penn recorded a thrilling 55-54 win over Brown three weeks ago, and the Quakers own a 97-20 advantage in the all-time series.
Matt Mullery is the leading scorer for Brown this season with 15.0 ppg on 55 percent shooting from the floor, and he is also tops with 6.2 rpg and 38 blocks. Peter Sullivan is the only other double-digit scorer in the fold for the Bears, as he is netting 12.0 ppg. Brown is generating 66.3 ppg while holding opponents to 71.8 ppg. The Bears were led by Sullivan's 21 points in the loss to Harvard last time out. Garrett Leffelman added 16 points in a game that saw Brown turn the ball over only seven times. Unfortunately, the team suffered a 36-19 rebounding disadvantage and allowed the Crimson to shoot 52.7 percent from the field.
Penn has struggled to generate offense all season, as the team is netting a mere 61.6 ppg on 39.7 percent shooting from the floor. Defensively, the club is permitting 74.0 ppg. Zack Rosen paces the Quakers with 16.6 ppg and 86 assists, while Jack Eggleston adds 12.9 ppg and 6.2 rpg. Rosen struggled against Princeton earlier this week, as he shot just 3-of-13 from the floor and fouled out of the contest. Still, Rosen led the Quakers with 15 points, and Jack Eggleston added 14 points. Penn shot just 32 percent from the field, including 4-of-18 from three-point range, suffered a 33-27 rebounding disadvantage.
This game features a pair of struggling teams, and while a narrow edge goes to Penn because of the home court advantage, the Quakers and Bears are both out of the Ivy League race.
