GAME NOTES: The Alabama Crimson Tide have traveled to Athens for today's SEC showdown with the Georgia Bulldogs.
Alabama has been idle since last Saturday when it posted a much-needed victory over Arkansas. That win halted a four-game losing streak for the Crimson Tide, who are a lowly 4-7 in league play, overshadowing a respectable 14-11 overall record. They carry a 2-4 mark in true road games into this affair.
As for Georgia, it has lost two of its last three games, including a 69-60 setback at Tennessee on Wednesday. That loss dropped the squad to 11-13 overall, including 3-8 in conference and a dreadful 0-9 in true road games. Fortunately, the Bulldogs bring a 10-3 home record into today's action.
The Crimson Tide own an 89-45 series advantage over the Bulldogs.
Alabama relies heavily on the duo of JaMychal Green and Mikhail Torrance to carry the load at the offensive end of the floor. Both players are scoring 14.8 ppg, and while Green is tops with 7.1 rpg and 47 blocks, Torrance has dished out 134 assists. The Crimson Tide are generating 67.8 ppg while holding opponents to 63.2 ppg, but the positive scoring differential should be credited to the club's non-conference play, not its results against SEC opponents. In the 73-68 victory over Arkansas last weekend, Green scored 22 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Torrance added 12 points off the bench for the Tide, who earned a 38-24 rebounding advantage and a 22-6 edge in points from the foul line.
Trey Thompkins was outstanding for Georgia against Tennessee on Wednesday, as he scored 25 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the floor to go along with 10 rebounds and three blocks. Unfortunately, the rest of the team combined for only 35 points in the setback. Georgia actually led by five points at intermission, but permitted the Vols to hit 18-of-32 field goal attempts in the second half. There is no question that Thompkins has been the best player for Georgia this season, as he is netting 17.2 ppg to go along with 7.7 rpg. Travis Leslie checks in with 14.5 ppg and 7.0 rpg, and he is the only other double-digit scorer on the roster. Ricky McPhee (9.9 rpg) is obviously close to joining the group.
In a game that figures to be close from start to finish, give a narrow edge to Georgia. The Bulldogs have been solid at home, while Alabama has struggled on the road.
