GAME NOTES: The California Golden Bears are fresh off a lopsided loss to a seemingly inferior opponent, and they are eager to get back to action against the Oregon Ducks in Pac-10 Conference play tonight.
Cal carried a three-game win streak into Thursday's matchup with Oregon State, and no one anticipated an 80-64 loss in that tilt. The Golden Bears are now 17-9 overall and 9-5 in conference, but while they are a stellar 13-1 at home, only four of the 12 games they have played outside of Berkeley have resulted in victory.
Nothing has gone right for Oregon lately, as the team has suffered four consecutive defeats to plummet to 12-13 overal1, including 4-9 in Pac-10 play. The most recent defeat occurred on Thursday by a 72-65 final against Stanford. The only positive that can be pointed out is that 10 of Oregon's 12 wins have come at home this season.
Cal crushed Oregon by an 89-57 final last month, and the Golden Bears own a 74-55 series lead over the Ducks.
Against Oregon State on Thursday, California played poorly at the defensive end, permitting the Beavers to shoot 54.3 percent from the field. The Golden Bears were also dominated on the boards by a 34-22 margin and were outscored 27-15 from the foul line. Theo Robertson netted 15 points in the loss, while Patrick Christopher added 12 points. Jerome Randle, who is one of the Pac-10's top performers, was held to six points on 2-of-9 field goal efficiency. Overall this season, Randle is averaging 19.3 ppg on the strength of his 40.2 percent shooting from three-point range, and he has dished out 118 assists. Christopher provides 16.1 ppg, and Robertson deposits 13.8 ppg. Jamal Boykin nets 11.5 ppg for the Golden Bears, who are posting 78.1 ppg while allowing 69.4 ppg.
There are only two double-digit scorers in the fold for Oregon, and Malcolm Armstead leads the charge with 11.2 ppg. Tajuan Porter checks in with 10.9 ppg, but his 34.2 percent shooting from the field is downright horrendous. The Ducks are scoring 70.5 ppg while allowing 70.0 ppg, but they are being outscored by more than eight points per contest by league foes. In the loss to Stanford a couple of days ago, center Jeremy Jacob posted 19 points and eight rebounds for Oregon. E.J. Singler added 15 points, while Porter and Armstead combined to shoot just 5-of-21 from the field. The Ducks earned a 35-25 rebounding advantage, but they were outscored 19-12 from the foul line and turned the ball over 16 times.
The road team gets the nod in this affair, as Cal will jump on top of Oregon early and cruise to victory. Expect a bounce-back effort from Randle.
