GAME NOTES: The Chattanooga Mocs will travel to Birmingham to face the Samford Bulldogs in a Southern Conference North Division matchup.
Chattanooga has been idle since last Saturday, when it lost at home to Furman 87-78. The Mocs have lost four straight and eight of their last 10. They stand at 13-14 overall and 5-9 in the North Division heading into the weekend. Despite its struggles, Chattanooga is still alive in the battle for a first- round bye in the conference tournament. The Mocs are just 2-8 on the road.
Samford has also been off since last Saturday, when it dropped a 59-54 homecourt decision to Wofford. The Bulldogs have lost six of their last seven and now stands at 10-16 overall. Samford is 4-10 in conference play and sits in fifth place in the North Division. Samford is just 6-6 at home this season.
These teams met just 10 days ago, with Samford winning in Chattanooga 78-54. The Mocs still have a 45-33 edge however, in a series that dates back to the 1925-26 season.
DeAntre Jefferson came off the bench to score 15 points for Chattanooga in its most recent loss. Keegan Bell and Ricky Taylor added 14 points each, while Ty Patterson finished with 12. Patterson is the team's leading scorer at 15.4 ppg, good for sixth in the conference heading into the weekend. He's hitting 42.4 percent from the floor, but just 61.2 percent from the foul line. Taylor is also scoring in double figures at 11.0 ppg. Ridge McKeither is the team's leading rebounder at 6.4 rpg, good for seventh in the SoCon. Bell is second in the conference in assists at 4.6 apg. He has a rather pedestrian assist-to- turnover ratio however, with 79 turnovers to go with his 123 assists. Chattanooga is shooting 42.6 percent from the floor as a team, but just 61.6 percent from the foul line. The Mocs are scoring 69.6 ppg, while allowing 71.5 ppg at the other end of the floor,
Trey Montgomery scored 17 points for Samford in its loss to Wofford. He was the only Bulldog to reach double figures. Samford led by 13 at one stage of the first half, but couldn't hold on. Josh Davis leads the Bulldogs in scoring at 10.8 ppg, hitting 43.1 percent from the floor and 39.5 percent from long range. Montgomery is next on the scoring list at 10.8 ppg, hitting 48.2 percent from the floor. Bryan Friday is also in double figures at 10.2 ppg. The Bulldogs have not done well on the glass this season. Davis and Jeffrey Merritt share the team lead in that category by a hair over Montgomery. All three are averaging 4.0 boards per contest. Montgomery is the team assist leader at 2.8 apg. Samford is shooting 45.9 percent from the floor, but is averaging just 57.6 ppg. Conversely, the Bulldogs are allowing just 59.5 ppg defensively.
The team that dictates the pace will come out on top. Both teams need a win, but the Mocs have more to play for.
