GAME NOTES: Inching closer and closer to a Big 12 title, the top-ranked Kansas Jayhawks put the nation's longest homecourt winning streak on the line in Lawrence this afternoon, as they play host to the Colorado Buffaloes in conference action from the Allen Fieldhouse.
The Jayhawks have won 25 of their 26 games on the season with the lone loss coming at Tennessee on January 10th. Since then, the team has reeled off 11 straight games, all in-conference, including Monday's 59-54 victory at Texas A&M. At 11-0 in league play, Kansas holds a three-game lead over second-place Kansas State heading into this weekend's action. Kansas is a perfect 15-0 at home this year and has won 56 straight games in Lawrence, overall.
The Buffaloes have had their moments this season, but very few have come in Big 12 action, as the team is hovering just outside of the league cellar at 3-8. One of those victories however, came on Wednesday, a 77-67 win over Oklahoma. It halted a four-game losing streak for CU, as the team tries to earn some momentum heading into the postseason.
Kansas holds a 118-39 advantage in the all-time series and is a stellar 50-5 in games played in the Allen Fieldhouse, including wins in each of the last 26 meetings in the building.
Colorado has been a decent offensive team this season, averaging 74.1 ppg, on a steady .466 shooting. Where the team has had its problems is at the defensive end, allowing foes to shoot .453 overall and net 72.0 ppg. Another area that has caused reason for worry, is the lack of rebounding. Coming into the weekend, CU has a -6.3 rebounding margin. Cory Higgins and Alex Burks are a potent one-two punch in terms of scoring. Higgins is fifth in the Big 12 at 18.1 ppg and Burks is seventh at 16.8. Marcus Relphorde rounds out the team's top scoring threats at 10.5 ppg. The Buffs ended an ugly four-game slide with a great performance against Oklahoma this week. Colorado made half its shots from the floor (28-of-56) and played unselfish basketball, amassing 19 assists in the game, as four players finished in double figures. Higgins once again led the charge with 18 points. Burks added 17, while Relphorde and Nate Tomlinson chipped in with 13 points apiece. Relphorde completed a double- double with 10 rebounds.
Kansas has shown itself capable of winning at both ends of the court this season and it was defensive tenacity that was the driving force in keeping the team undefeated in league play with a hard-fought win at Texas A&M. The visiting Jayhawks held the Aggies to just 54 points on .349 shooting, including a mere .250 in the second half. Offensively, it was some of the usual suspects for Kansas, as center Cole Aldrich, forward Marcus Morris and guard Xavier Henry all netted 12 points. Aldrich finished off a double-double with 10 rebounds. All-American candidate Sherron Collins however, struggled a bit, converting just 2-of-9 shots from the floor and finishing with a mere seven points. Collins has been a much bigger offensive factor this year, leading the team in both scoring (15.1 ppg) and assists (109). Henry has been fantastic in his first year in Lawrence, as the freshman nets 13.2 ppg. Morris (13.1 ppg, 6.3 rpg) and Aldrich (11.4 ppg, 10.1 rpg) provide plenty of frontcourt balance. In all, Kansas leads the nation in scoring margin (+19.8), averaging 82.2 ppg, while allowing just 62.4.
Its been a long time since anyone has entered Lawrence and left with a win over the Jayhawks. The long streak should be in little jeopardy this weekend, as Kansas simply has too much firepower for Colorado to contend with.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
