GAME NOTES: The UNLV Runnin' Rebels will try to snap out of their funk this evening, as they host the Colorado State Rams in a Mountain West Conference tussle at the Thomas & Mack Center.
After winning five straight games, including an upset of BYU, the Rebels were nationally ranked and in the thick of the MWC title race. The team however, was edged by New Mexico in a battle for the top spot on February 10th, sending the squad into a downward spiral. Things got worse on Wednesday, when UNLV suffered its third straight defeat, a 66-61 decision at Utah. The Rebels are still a solid 19-7 overall, but their MWC title hopes are all but gone now at 7-5 within the conference.
The Rams meanwhile, saw their run of three straight wins come to an abrupt end with a 92-70 loss to nationally-ranked BYU on Wednesday. It was the second lopsided loss of the season to the Cougars, as CSU is now 15-10 overall and 6-5 in conference play.
As for the all-time series, UNLV holds a commanding 30-8 lead over CSU and the Rebels have won 13 of the last 14 meetings, including an 80-72 triumph just last month.
The Rams simply could not slow down the Cougars on Wednesday, allowing BYU to shoot 51.7 percent from the floor, including 13-of-25 from downtown, in a 22- point setback. CSU, meanwhile, hit on just 40.4 percent of its attempts from the floor and only 4-of-17 from three-point range. Travis Franklin guided the team in the loss with 14 points and seven boards, while Andy Ogide had 13 points and six rebounds. Dorian Green chipped in with 10 points and he continues to pace CSU on the season with an average of 12.6 ppg. Ogide adds 11.6 ppg and a team-best 5.9 rpg to the mix, while Franklin checks in with 11.0 ppg and 5.4 rpg.
The Rebels made only 43.4 percent of their field goals compared to a much better 52.9 percent shooting performance by Utah in a 66-61 setback on Wednesday. UNLV struggled from long range (3-of-12) and was outscored in the paint, 38-24, in the defeat. Tre'Von Willis did most of the damage for the Rebels, as he poured in 32 points and recorded three of the team's 11 steals. It was quite a performance from Willis, who is averaging 18.3 ppg for the season and an even better 22.3 ppg in conference play. He can do more than score, as Willis also grabs 4.0 rpg and dishes out 3.5 apg.
UNLV is the better club from top-to-bottom and should be able to get back on track with a victory over the Rams in this one.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
