GAME NOTES: Two teams that have combined for just three Conference USA wins collide at the Tudor Fieldhouse today, as the East Carolina Pirates lock up with the Rice Owls.
The Pirates have had plenty of time to regroup from their most recent beating, a 100-76 defeat at Texas-El Paso a week ago. It marked the fourth loss in the past five games for ECU, which has allowed 100 points in two of its last the bouts. The Pirates are now just 2-9 in conference play, with both their wins coming against Tulane.
Rice meanwhile, is an even worse 1-10 within the conference and its lone win came over East Carolina on January 30th. Since that victory, the Owls have fallen in four straight league bouts, including a 67-57 setback at SMU on Wednesday. Rice now returns back home, where it has gone 0-5 in conference action.
The Owls lead the head-to-head series with the Pirates, 5-3, and that includes the 69-58 victory in last month's meeting.
The Pirates have three double-figure scorers on their roster at the moment, with Brock Young leading the trio at 14.6 ppg. Young can do much more than just score though, as he also tops the squad with 6.0 apg and 42 steals. Darrius Morrow tacks on 12.5 ppg and a team-best 6.7 rpg for ECU, while Jamar Abrams pitches in with 11.1 ppg and 5.0 rpg. In the team's last game, Young was the only one of the trio to reach double digits, finishing with 13 points and seven assists in a loss at UTEP. ECU shot a sound 51.0 percent from the floor in the game, but that wasn't even enough to overcome its 23 turnovers and poor defense.
With the score tied at 55-55, SMU put together a 12-0 run that sent Rice to a 67-57 defeat on Wednesday. It was a disappointing finish for the Owls, who shot just 33.3 percent from the floor in the second half. Lucas Kuipers tallied 19 points and seven boards to pace the Owls, meanwhile, Connor Frizzelle deposited 16 points off the bench. Tamir Jackson and Arsalan Kazemi, however, combined for just five points and that simply wasn't enough for the team's top two scorers. Jackson leads the squad with 11.0 ppg and 3.2 apg, while Kazemi checks in with 10.8 ppg and a team-high 9.0 rpg for the season.
Rice defeated ECU on the road in the first meeting, so look for the Owls to get the job done on their home floor today for the season sweep
