GAME NOTES: In-state rivals take a break from their respective conference schedules this afternoon, as the Eastern Michigan Eagles make their way to the Motor City to challenge the Detroit Titans as part of the annual BracketBusters event.
The Eagles, who are currently a game under .500 in Mid-American Conference action at 6-7, have won two straight now for the first time since late December/early January. The squad took on hapless Toledo on Wednesday night and rose to the occasion with a 58-42 thumping of the Rockets, the third win in the last four outings for Eastern Michigan.
As for the Titans, a team that is 10-5 at home in 2009-10, they have hit the skids in recent weeks with three consecutive losses and five in the last six outings overall. The lone win during that stretch came out of conference against Chicago State (92-72). Three nights ago, Detroit was tossed aside by Wright State in a 70-53 final on the road.
With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, the Titans have won seven in a row and now own a commanding 59-18 edge versus the Eagles.
The Eastern Michigan defense came ready to play against the Rockets earlier this week, holding Toledo to a mere 42 points which is the fewest posted by an Eagles opponent since the program limited Wayne State to that same number way back in 1980. Brandon Bowdry tallied 20 points and pulled down eight rebounds for the visitors, while Carlos Medlock picked up 11 points and four assists for the program. EMU made it through with just 40 percent shooting from the field and 5-of-21 behind the three-point line. A 51.1 percent shooter from the floor for the season, Bowdry leads the team in scoring to this point with his 16.6 ppg and is also first with nearly 10 rebounds per game as well. Medlock is close behind in the scoring department with his 15.4 ppg, but in his case he has made good on just 37.8 percent of his field goal chances. The squad is scoring only 65.8 ppg, but after the meeting with Toledo the Eagles are now permitting just 65 ppg as well.
Detroit hung tough with the Raiders in the first half of their meeting, but after leading by a point at the break the Titans lost their focus and made a total of only six field goals in the second half, en route to the 17-point loss. Chase Simon scored a team-best 13 points for Detroit, followed by Xavier Keeling who dropped in 11 points, but it mattered little as all five Wright State starters scored in double figures. Simon heads a list of four double- digit scorers on the Detroit roster with his 14.8 ppg, yet he is shooting just 41.5 percent from the floor and 64.0 percent at the free-throw line. Keeling checks in with 12.4 ppg, followed by Thomas Kennedy and Eli Holman with 11.2 ppg, respectively. Unfortunately, because those four double-digit scorers play so much, there is the potential for them to get into foul trouble and that can curtail their production in a myriad of ways.
Just a few years ago, opponents dreaded going into Calihan Hall because the Titans were simply so dominant in the building, but now it doesn't carry so much mystique, which is why EMU has a chance to come up with the win.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
