GAME NOTES: Coming off their first win as a ranked team in more than 50 years, the Richmond Spiders try to keep the good times going when they play host to the George Washington Colonials in an Atlantic 10 Conference clash tonight at the Robins Center.
George Washington had a rough month or so between January 10-February 6, dropping seven of eight games, but the team has bounced back to post a modest two-game win streak in the last week. First, there was a 78-53 beating of Fordham, which was followed by a 66-60 triumph over Massachusetts on Wednesday night. As a result, the Colonials currently sit at 14-10 overall and 4-7 in conference. GW has claimed victory in seven of its 12 true road games this season, giving the team some confidence heading into this affair.
Richmond is 21-6 on the year and owns the top spot in the Atlantic 10 with a 10-2 league ledger. The Spiders have won their last seven games, the most recent of which was an 84-56 shellacking of Fordham. UR, which is ranked 25th in the nation this week, is a near-perfect 12-1 at home.
The Colonials own a 56-27 advantage in the all-time series, but the Spiders won the most recent encounter, taking a 62-57 decision on GW's home court on January 23rd.
George Washington is averaging 70.5 ppg for the season, while allowing 66.6 ppg. The team boasts just two double-digit scorers in the form of Damian Hollis (14.1 ppg) and Lasan Kromah (11.4 ppg), although Tony Taylor (9.1 ppg) is close to joining them. Hollis is the Colonials' leading rebounder with 4.9 rpg, the team as a whole coming up with 39.2 rpg on average. Turnovers have played a key role in GW's favorable overall record, as it forces an average of 16 giveaways per outing. Kromah, just a freshman, scored a game-high 22 points to power the Colonials past UMass earlier this week. Joseph Katuka came off the bench to record his second career double-double consisting of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Both teams struggled to hit their shots, the Colonials doing so just 33.9 percent of the time while also having difficulty at the foul line in going a mere 17-of-33. Fortunately, the Minutemen hit just 35.3 percent of their field goal attempts. A 55-34 rebounding advantage and the fact that UMass went only 13-of-23 from the charity stripe also helped GW's cause.
Richmond whipped Fordham on Wednesday night, sending the Rams to their 17th straight defeat. Kevin Anderson led the way for the Spiders, netting 17 of his 19 points in the first half, while Dan Geriot added 14 points, moving him past the 1,000-point mark for his career in the process. David Gonzalvez chipped in with 13 points, and Justin Harper finished with 11 for Richmond, which shot 52.6 percent from the field and converted 17-of-22 free-throw attempts. Defensively, the Spiders held the hapless Rams to 37.9 percent field goal efficiency and scored 33 points off 19 Fordham turnovers. Anderson is the team's top scorer on the season, averaging 17.2 ppg in hitting 45.9 percent of his field goal attempts, while Gonzalvez and Harper are also in double figures with 13.8 and 10.4 ppg, respectively, the team as a whole putting up 68.1 ppg. Defensively, the Spiders are yielding a mere 59.8 ppg on 38.3 percent overall shooting, which includes a meager 28.5 percent rate of success from three- point range. UR is -4.3 in rebounding margin, but forces an average of 15.5 turnovers per outing.
Richmond is clearly the better team in this matchup, and while the Colonials may hang around for a while, expect the Spiders to post their 13th home win of the season.
