GAME NOTES: The Maryland Terrapins will attempt to continue their recent string of strong play in today's ACC clash with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
Georgia Tech managed to halt a two-game slide with a 68-51 romp over North Carolina on Tuesday, enabling the team to move to 13-1 at home. Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets are just 3-6 in true road games heading into this affair. They are 18-8 overall and 6-6 in ACC action, and a strong finish to this regular season is needed to impress the NCAA Tournament selection committee.
Maryland should feel a bit more secure about its prospects for the "Big Dance." Sure, the Terps have the same number of overall wins as Tech, but they are 8-3 against ACC competition and have won four of their last five games. On Wednesday, the club knocked off NC State by a 67-58 final.
The Terrapins own a 36-33 series edge over the Yellow Jackets, and Maryland has won the last eight meetings.
The strength of the Georgia Tech team is its frontcourt, as Gani Lawal and Derrick Favors provide plenty of size and ability. Lawal is netting 14.0 ppg on 52.9 percent shooting from the field, and he is ripping down 9.5 rpg as well. As for Favors, who is just a freshman, he checks in with 11.1 ppg, 8.2 rpg and 49 blocks. The Yellow Jackets are scoring 74.3 ppg through 26 outings, and they are permitting 64.1 ppg to opponents. Against North Carolina last time out, Favors scored 13 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Brian Oliver and Zachery Peacock both had 12 points, while Lawal finished with nine points and 11 rebounds. The Yellow Jackets played tremendous defense, holding the Tar Heels to 32.2 percent shooting from the field.
Greivis Vasquez carried an average of 18.5 ppg and 147 assists into Wednesday's clash with NC State, so the Wolfpack knew what to expect from the standout Maryland guard. To the credit of Vasquez, he fought through a shaky first half and netted 17 points over the final 20 minutes en route to 26 points and six assists in the victory. Landon Milbourne, Eric Hayes and Sean Mosley all entered the NC State averaging double figures in scoring for Maryland. Although all three of those players were quiet, Jordan Williams came through with 19 points and 11 rebounds. The Terps played tremendous defense in the tilt, limiting the Wolfpack to 34.8 percent shooting from the field.
Expect another tremendous effort from Vasquez, who will feed off the energy of the home crowd. Maryland will continue its winning ways.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
