GAME NOTES: Fresh off a shocking defeat, the 13th-ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs will attempt to pick up the pieces in tonight's West Coast Conference clash with the struggling Pepperdine Waves.
Gonzaga had won four straight games and 13 of 14 heading into Thursday's matchup with Loyola Marymount, a team that entered two games below .500 in WCC play. Therefore, the 74-66 loss to the Lions was a shocker. If the Bulldogs won that game, they could have locked up their 10th straight WCC regular- season title tonight, but the race for the league crown is now much more interesting.
It has been over a month since Pepperdine last won a game. The Waves have suffered eight consecutive defeats to fall to 7-20 overall and 3-8 in WCC action, and they are coming off an 83-62 loss to Portland.
The Bulldogs beat the Waves by a 91-84 final in the first meeting this season, and Gonzaga owns a 37-31 advantage in the all-time series.
On Thursday, Gonzaga shot a mere 34.4 percent from the floor against Loyola Marymount, the most obvious reason for the setback. The Bulldogs struggled at times at the defensive end, and while they did hit their first four three- pointers in the tilt, they finished 6-of-17 from behind the arc. Elias Harris led the way in the setback with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Demetri Goodson and Steven Gray scored 11 points apiece. As for Matt Bouldin, he tallied 10 points. Through 26 outings, Bouldin averages 16.5 ppg, while Harris brings 15.3 ppg and 7.9 rpg to the mix. Gray is netting 13.3 ppg for the Bulldogs, who are getting 10.0 ppg from Robert Sacre. Gonzaga is generating 78.1 ppg while allowing 68.0 ppg to opponents.
Keion Bell is clearly the go-to guy at the offensive end of the floor for Pepperdine, as he is netting 19.6 ppg to go along with 5.2 rpg and 96 assists. Bell also leads the club with 39 steals, but his total of 106 turnovers is high. Mychel Thompson is the only other double-digit scorer for the Waves, as he checks in with 12.1 ppg despite 37 percent shooting from the floor. Pepperdine is generating 67.0 ppg, but it is allowing 74.7 ppg to opponents. Bell scored 23 points against Portland two nights ago, and Taylor Darby added 11 points. Jonathan Dupre posted 10 points off the bench for the Waves, who allowed the Pilots to knock down 13-of-25 three-pointers. They were also outscored 14-6 from the foul line and forced a mere eight turnovers.
There is no chance that Gonzaga will lose a second straight game to an inferior opponents. Expect a blowout.
