GAME NOTES: The James Madison Dukes shoot for just their third true road win of the 2009-10 campaign this evening as they challenge the Canisius Golden Griffins in BracketBusters play at the Koessler Center in Buffalo.
The Dukes, members of the Colonial Athletic Association, have lost five of their last six games overall as they prepare for the first of back-to-back games outside of league play. James Madison, which has Longwood on the schedule for Monday night, was in action last Tuesday and was dealt a 77-72 loss by Georgia State, dropping the program to just 4-12 against the rest of the CAA.
As for the Golden Griffins, members of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference where they are in seventh place entering the weekend, they've bowed in four of their last five games, the lone win coming against a woeful Marist program eight days ago. On Valentine's Day the squad was dealt a 74-57 loss by league- leading Siena.
With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, this is the first-ever meeting.
Denzel Bowles scored a game-high 34 points and cleared nine rebounds earlier in the week, yet that still was not enough as JMU suffered a five-point loss to the Georgia State Panthers in Atlanta. Bowles made good on 12-of-19 shots from the floor and 10-of-13 at the free-throw line, while Julius Wells tacked on 18 points as he converted 5-of-6 at the charity stripe. In what became a close game, the fact that no one else on the JMU roster made it to the free- throw line became a factor. Bowles, who has at least held a share of the scoring lead for the Dukes in each of the last seven games, is putting up 21.4 ppg now as a 58.9 percent shooter from the floor. Bowles is also tops on the glass with better than nine per game, for a team that is still losing out to the opposition in that department by almost two rebounds per contest and that's just one of the reason why opposing programs are also outscoring JMU by a margin of more than three points per game as well.
Bob Bevilacqua came off the bench to hit 5-of-9 shots behind the three-point line and 6-of-12 from the floor overall, en route to his team-best 17 points, but with the starting five barely showing up the Golden Griffs could not compete against Siena even at home. Frank Turner certainly made an effort as he tallied 15 points and handed out nine assists, against just two turnovers, but still he could not make up for Julius Coles who hit on a mere 3-of-16 from the field in the outing. Turner is the one who does it all for this team, scoring 16.8 ppg, clearing 5.1 rpg and handing out a total of 147 assists while also showing quick hands at the defensive end of the floor with 57 steals. Coles accounts for 14.8 ppg, but his performance earlier this week is nothing all that new, seeing as how he is shooting just 37.7 percent from the field right now.
As long as Bowles comes ready to play and he can count on some minor support at the very least, expect JMU to capture the win on the road.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
