GAME NOTES: The top two teams in the SEC collide this evening in Nashville, as the second-ranked Kentucky Wildcats invade Memorial Gym to take on the 17th- ranked Vanderbilt Commodores.
John Calipari's Wildcats have the best overall mark in the SEC at 10-1 and are sitting atop the SEC East. Kentucky enters this weekend with a six-game win streak in tow, including a thrilling and perhaps controversial 81-75 overtime victory at Mississippi State.
Kevin Stallings' Commodores are hot on Kentucky's trail, sitting just a game back in the division at 9-2. Vanderbilt has won three straight games and four of its last five, including an 82-78 decision at Ole Miss on Thursday.
This is the 176th all-time meeting between these two teams, with Kentucky coming out victorious in 132 of those matchups. The two teams have split a pair of regular season meetings the last two years, but Kentucky has an opportunity to record the regular-season sweep after posting an 85-72 win in Lexington on January 30th.
For the first time since 1987, Kentucky had three players record double- doubles as they were able to outlast MSU in Starkville this week in overtime. DeMarcus Cousins finished with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Patrick Patterson ended with 19 points and 10 boards, while John Wall tallied 18 points and 10 caroms, just missing a triple-double with eight assists. Kentucky has dominated play despite the team's youth. Wall and Cousins may just be freshmen, but they are two of the best players in the country. Wall leads the team in scoring and assists, averaging 17.0 points and 6.4 assists per outing. Cousins is a dominating force in the paint, averaging a double-double with 16.0 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. Patterson nets 14.8 points and grabs 7.4 rebounds per game to aid in the frontcourt, while yet another freshman, Eric Bledsoe (10.8 ppg), adds support to the perimeter game. Kentucky ranks among the nation's top offensive team, at 81.3 ppg on a healthy .484 shooting. However, the explosive scoring potential has not come at the expense of the team's defense. The Wildcats are holding foes to just 65.7 ppg and well under 40 percent shooting (.380).
The Commodores will certainly try to keep up with the Wildcats, with their own scoring ability. Vanderbilt is not far behind Kentucky in terms of production, averaging 78.6 ppg on 48.4 percent shooting. Scoring depth is obvious, with four players currently averaging double figures. Jermaine Beal leads the way with 14.7 ppg. He is followed closely by Jeffrey Taylor and his 14.1 ppg. A.J. Ogilvy (13.9 ppg, 6.1 rpg) gives the team a low post presence, while John Jenkins (10.3 ppg) is a catalyst off the bench. In the four-point win at Ole Miss, Vandy trailed big early on, but fought back, thanks in large part to a huge performance by Ogilvy, who erupted for 27 points and eight rebounds. Taylor poured in 19 points, while Beal chipped in with 14. The Commodores shot .473 from the floor and outscored the Rebels at the free-throw line 26-10.
Kentucky got what some would consider fortunate calls in Starkville this week and will need to be on top of their game against the Commodores today. Still, the Wildcats have their sights on a conference crown and can really put a stranglehold on that with a win in Nashville.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
