Louisiana Tech (20-6) at Northeastern (18-9)

GAME NOTES: The Northeastern Huskies take a break from their Colonial Athletic Association schedule this weekend as they challenge the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs in a BracketBusters contest at Matthews Arena in Boston.

The Huskies head into the weekend tied with Old Dominion atop the CAA standings with a record of 13-3, thanks to a 65-56 win over the UNC Wilmington Seahawks on the road on Tuesday night. The victory was the fifth in the last six games for a team that has suffered just two setbacks since Christmas.

As for the Bulldogs, they had been one of the leading teams in the Western Athletic Conference, but recent weeks have seen the squad fall off the pace set by league-leading Utah State which registered a 67-61 win over LaTech on Wednesday night in Logan. With the loss, Tech is now tied for third place in the WAC with a record of 8-4.

With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, Louisiana Tech won the only previous meeting.

The Bulldogs shot just 37.5 percent from the field and 6-of-22 behind the three-point line on Wednesday night as they watched the Utah State Aggies pick up a six-point win at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. Magnum Rolle accounted for 15 points and seven rebounds, while DeAndre Brown and Kyle Gibson dropped in 14 points apiece as they combined to shoot only 9-of-31 from the floor. Rolle has been on, well, a roll of late by leading the team in scoring in five of the last six outings, yet his 14.7 ppg on the season is still a far cry from the 20.7 ppg being put up by Gibson. Playing almost 36 minutes per game, Gibson is second on the team with 86 assists and has also been contributing on the glass with better than four rebounds per outing for a team that is taking care of opponents by more than four rebounds per game at the moment.

Down by 11 at the break, the Huskies somehow found themselves trailing by as many as 14 points just seconds into the second half before they mounted a defense and held the Seahawks to only nine total field goals in the frame. Chaisson Allen tallied a game-high 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field, followed by Manny Adako with 22 and eight boards while Matt Janning tossed in 12 points which means the trio combined for all but eight of Northeastern's points on the night. Janning remains the top scorer for the Huskies with his 15.0 ppg, but Allen is right behind him with his 14.5 ppg and has been deftly accurate behind the three-point line where he has knocked down 66-of-144 (.458) and has been able to accomplish that feat while also distributing a team-best 101 assists at the same time. Nkem Ojougboh (9.1 ppg, 7.3 rpg) has been a force in the paint with 62 blocked shots, one of the main reason why the opposition is scoring just 59.8 ppg this season.

This battle pits one of the better interior teams in LaTech versus a Huskies squad that gambles quite a bit from the outside, so it makes sense to think the Bulldogs will fare better as they play closer to the rim.
