GAME NOTES: The Pete Maravich Assembly Center in Baton Rouge is the site of today's SEC contest between the hapless LSU Tigers and the visiting Mississippi State Bulldogs.
Mississippi State played with a great deal of passion on Tuesday against national powerhouse Kentucky and pushed the mighty Wildcats to overtime. Unfortunately, the home crowd left disappointed, as the Bulldogs had a modest two-game win streak halted with an 81-75 defeat. They are now 18-8 overall and 6-5 in SEC action, but they are just 3-5 in true road games heading into today's affair.
Since the start of SEC play back in early January, LSU has suffered 11 consecutive defeats to establish itself as the conference's worst team. The Tigers, who are 9-16 overall, dropped a 77-69 decision to Vanderbilt last Saturday, and they have been idle since that affair. The only reason for LSU to feel any confidence today is that all nine wins this season have come at home.
MSU defeated LSU by a 67-51 final on January 30th, but the Tigers still own a 103-94 series lead over the Bulldogs.
Ravern Johnson is the leading scorer for Mississippi State this season with 13.7 ppg on 43 percent shooting from three-point range, but he was held out of the Kentucky game for disciplinary reasons, and it is unclear if he will play today. Dee Bost led the way against Kentucky with 22 points, and Kodi Augustus pitched in 17 points. Barry Stewart added 16 points, and Jarvis Varnado was held to 10 points, five rebounds and two blocks. The Bulldogs were outscored 10-0 from the foul line in overtime and suffered a 52-35 rebounding disadvantage in the tilt. A 21-11 deficit in points from the foul line also hurt the cause. Varnado is averaging 13.2 ppg and 11.1 rpg, and the fact that he has blocked 127 shots is highly impressive. Bost checks in with 12.4 ppg and 133 assists, while Stewart is scoring 11.6 ppg.
Against Vanderbilt last week, LSU got 20 points from standout forward Tasmin Mitchell. Bo Spencer was close behind with 18 points, and Storm Warren tallied 12 points. The Tigers suffered a 31-14 rebounding deficit in that clash, perhaps the most obvious reason for the negative outcome. LSU is generating only 62.6 ppg this season on 40.6 percent shooting from the floor, and the team is allowing 67.7 ppg to opponents. Mitchell is scoring 17.3 ppg to go along with 9.6 rpg, and Spencer provides 15.1 ppg. As for Warren, he checks in with 12.0 ppg for a team that lacks any depth to speak off. The fourth-leading scorer on the roster contributes a mere 4.2 ppg.
The edge has to go to Mississippi State in this game, as it is obvious that LSU just doesn't know how to win.
