GAME NOTES: The two top teams in their respective conferences, the Morgan State Bears and the Murray State Racers, take advantage of an opportunity to play in front of a national audience today as they tangle in one of the many BracketBusters matchups.
The Racers are riding the longest win streak in the nation at the moment, numbering 16 in a row, which is tied for the longest run in school history, set twice during the 1930's. In addition to being perfect since a December 22nd meeting against Western Kentucky, Murray State also has the seventh- longest home win streak in the country right now, having won 17 straight. The most recent outing for the Ohio Valley Conference leaders took place on Tuesday night versus Southeast Missouri State, a meeting that resulted in an 80-68 triumph.
As for the Bears, who are playing in this annual event for the second straight year, they had been cruising along with an 11-game win streak of their own coming into this week, but on Monday night the team was brought back to reality by fellow MEAC member South Carolina State in a 71-68 setback at home. The defeat was the first for the program since losing back-to-back non-league outings the first week of January.
This game marks the first-ever meeting between these two schools on the hardwood.
Kevin Thompson registered a double-double consisting of 11 points and 13 rebounds, but the effort was not enough as the Bears suffered a rare loss at home on Monday. Also scoring in double figures for a team that shot just 4- of-18 behind the three-point line, were Reggie Holmes and Joe Davis with 17 and 13 points, respectively, although between the two they made just 2-of-11 chances out on the perimeter. One of the top scorers in the entire nation, Holmes is posting 22.2 ppg as the only player to have started all 27 games for Morgan State. He is shooting only 39.1 percent from the field and has accounted for more than one-fourth of all the team's field goal attempts thus far. He's done most of his damage at the free-throw line where he has made 182-of-221 chances. Thompson is averaging a double-double with 12.5 ppg and 12.0 rpg, the latter making him one of the toughest interior performers in the country.
The Racers spread the wealth earlier this week as they put as many as 14 players into the game against SEMO and had all but two of them land in the scoring column as they won yet again. Danero Thomas and Tony Easley led the way with 18 and 12 points, respectively, yet the former saw action for just 17 minutes before heading to the bench. On a team that is scoring close to 79 ppg and beating opponents by an average of 18.3 ppg this season, it is amazing to find that not a single player is averaging even 11.0 ppg at the moment. Balance is the name of the game for Murray State as it places four players in double figures, beginning with Easley and B.J. Jenkins with 10.5 ppg, followed by Thomas and Ivan Aska with 10.3 ppg. At any given times, any one of those players can be the top scorer in a single game for the Racers, but then the next time out it could be someone different, which means defenses cannot always plan accordingly.
Unfortunately for the Bears, the teams that they've been dominating by no means matches what Murray State has had to deal with in the last two months and, seeing as how this is a home game for the Racers, winning should be almost automatic.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
