North Carolina (14-12) at Boston College (12-13)

GAME NOTES: The struggling North Carolina Tar Heels hope to score a much- needed victory in today's ACC clash with the Boston College Eagles, who are desperate for a win of their own.

It is hard to believe that eight of the last 10 outings for North Carolina have resulted in defeat, especially considering that the team won the national title a year ago. The Tar Heels, who are young, inexperienced and short an injured star, fell to Georgia Tech on Tuesday by a 68-51 final. They are now 14-12 overall, including a woeful 3-8 in league play, and it is obvious that they will probably have to win the ACC Tournament to get into the "Big Dance."

Boston College has suffered four consecutive defeats to plummet to 12-13 overall. The club owns the same ACC mark as UNC after last Sunday's 62-47 loss to Florida State. Those 47 points marked the worst offensive effort of the season for the Eagles.

UNC owns a 6-4 series edge over Boston College, but the Eagles managed to beat the mighty Tar Heels last season.

North Carolina forward/center Ed Davis broke his wrist last week and will likely miss the rest of the season. His 13.4 ppg and 9.6 rpg will be missed, as will his shot-blocking ability. Deon Thompson is now the only double-digit scorer in the fold, as he is posting 14.3 ppg on 50 percent shooting from the floor. The Tar Heels are netting 77.6 ppg and 72.8 ppg, but they are being outscored by 5.4 ppg in league affairs. Against Georgia Tech earlier this week, Thompson scored 17 points, and John Henson added 11 points and 10 rebounds. Unfortunately for the Heels, they shot just 32.2 percent from the floor, including 3-of-15 from three-point range. They also turned the ball over 19 times. The Heels got some good news this week as coach Roy Williams announced that sophomore forward Tyler Zeller (9.6 ppg, 4.6 rpg) is set to return to the lineup after missing more than a month with a foot injury.

Joe Trapani is the leading scorer for Boston College this season with 14.5 ppg, and he is pulling down 6.5 rpg as well. Reggie Jackson checks in with 13.4 ppg, and Corey Raji provides 11.3 ppg. The fourth and final double-digit scorer in the fold for the Eagles is Rakim Sanders with 11.0 ppg. Boston College is generating 69.7 ppg while allowing 66.4 ppg to foes, but the club is being outscored by 6.5 ppg in ACC action. Trapani scored 17 points for the Eagles in the loss to Florida State last time out, and Sanders netted 12 points. In that tilt, Boston College turned the ball over 20 times and shot a woeful 33.3 percent from the field.

Despite being on the road, Williams is entirely too good a coach to allow his team to lose to this Boston College team today. Expect Thompson to lead his squad to victory.
