GAME NOTES: Coming off their biggest win in quite some time, the Loyola Marymount Lions now focus on the streaking University of Portland Pilots in tonight's West Coast Conference bout at Gersten Pavilion.
The Lions shook up the WCC on Thursday, as they knocked off 13th-ranked Gonzaga, 74-66, in Gersten Pavilion. It marked the program's first win over a Top 25 opponent since 1990, snapping a 35-game losing skid against ranked teams. The triumph was also the third in four games for LMU, which is now 14-13 overall and 5-6 within the conference.
As for the Pilots, they have really been playing well over the last month, winning three straight and seven of their past eight outings. On Thursday, Portland coasted past Pepperdine, 83-62, remain in the unit for the WCC title at 7-3. The Pilots however, lost to league-leading Gonzaga twice, so they are really competing with Saint Mary's for the second seed in the upcoming WCC Tournament.
In terms of the all-time series, LMU holds a slim 41-39 edge over Portland, although the Pilots crushed the Lions, 79-39, in the first meeting of the season.
The Pilots shot an efficient 53.8 percent, including a 13-of-25 effort from behind the arc, as they breezed past Pepperdine on Thursday. Jared Stohl and T.J. Campbell each had 18 points and four assists in the win and they also combined for 11-of-18 shooting from three-point land. The Pilots played again without leading scorer Nik Raivio (14.1 ppg), who is out indefinitely with a strained right Achilles. That leaves Campbell as the team's leading scorer at 13.7 ppg and he is also dishing out a club-best 5.4 apg. Robin Smeulders adds 13.0 ppg and 6.6 rpg to the equation, while Stohl chips in with 11.5 ppg on the strength of 47.2 percent shooting from long range.
The Lions dropped in 46.6 percent of their attempts from the floor and 6-of-12 from downtown, as they stunned Gonzaga on Thursday. LMU also went 14-of-19 at the foul line and handed out 19 assists on 27 made field goals. Ashley Hamilton led the way with 17 points and six boards, while Drew Viney notched a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards. Viney currently tops the roster in scoring (16.8 ppg) as well as rebounding (7.0 rpg) and he also has good range, shooting 42.3 percent from three-point land. Vernon Teel is another versatile player for LMU, as he turns in 14.6 ppg, 5.4 rpg and a team-best 6.1 apg. Jarred DuBois tacks on 12.8 ppg, while Kevin Young and Larry Davis chip in with 11.0 and 10.5 ppg, respectively.
LMU is coming off an impressive win and with another balanced effort, look for the Lions to keep moving forward with a victory over Portland tonight.
