GAME NOTES: The Portland State Vikings make their way to Greeley tonight, as they take on the Northern Colorado Bears in a crucial Big Sky Conference bout at Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion.
The Vikings enter the game in possession of the sixth and final playoff spot for the BCS Tournament at 5-8. PSU though, is trailed closely by both Eastern Washington and Idaho State, so their is no margin for error. With that said, the Vikings have put themselves in such bad position behind a four-game losing streak that includes a heart-breaking 86-85 double-overtime loss at Northern Arizona on Thursday.
The Bears meanwhile, still have a slim chance to catch Weber State for the top spot, as they are 10-4 and two games back in the loss column. UNC has won four of its last five outings, including a 58-54 victory over Eastern Washington on Thursday. The win improved the team to 21-6 overall and 10-1 at home.
UNC however, has never defeated PSU before, losing all prior 11 meetings, including a 85-69 setback last month.
NAU's DeAngelo Jones converted a bucket with 13 seconds left in the second overtime to send PSU to a tough 86-85 loss on Thursday. The Vikings had no answer for the game-winning score, as Dominic Waters was unable to convert on the final play. Waters finished the night with 29 points and six assists, while Jamie Jones notched a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. For the season, Waters tops the roster in scoring at 18.4 ppg and he also distributes a team-best 4.8 apg. Jones adds 14.2 ppg and a team-high 8.0 rpg to the equation, while Melvin Jones and Julius Thomas check in with 11.7 and 10.3 ppg, respectively.
The Bears went 21-of-28 at the foul line and forced 17 turnovers, as they slipped past EWU on Thursday. Will Figures did most of the damage for UNC with 23 points and seven boards, while Chris Kaba posted 14 points and eight rebounds. The Bears played their first game without second leading scorer Devon Beitzel (14.3 ppg), who has a broken foot and will likely miss the rest of the season. That leaves Figures as the team's only double-digit scorer, as he averages 16.7 ppg on the strength of 41.1 percent shooting from long range. As a team, the Bears are netting 73.8 ppg, but that number will likely drop with Beitzel missing from the lineup.
The Vikings need this game a lot more than the Bears do, so look for PSU to take advantage of a short-handed UNC club and spring the upset tonight.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
