GAME NOTES: The Jacksonville State Gamecocks will host the Presbyterian Blue Hose in a Bracketbuster game that matches the Big South against the Ohio Valley Conference.
The Blue Hose come in off a 69-66 homecourt overtime loss to UNC-Asheville on Tuesday night. It was the fourth straight loss for Presbyterian and eighth in its last nine games. The Blue Hose stands at 4-23 overall and 2-13 in the Big South. PC is winless in 16 starts on the road this season.
Jacksonville State comes in off a 76-57 loss at Tennessee State on Wednesday. It was the Gamecocks' third straight defeat and fifth in their last six games. Jacksonville State stands at 11-16 overall and 7-10 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Despite having had an up-and-down season, the Gamecocks have been solid at home, where they have a 10-6 mark
Chase Holmes scored 20 points for PC in the Tuesday loss. Jake Troyli added 14 points, while Walt Allen contributed 11 points and 11 rebounds. The Blue Hose trailed 29-24 at halftime after shooting just 7-of-26 from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, but rallied to force a 54-54 tie at the end of regulation. PC never led by more than two at any point in the game. Holmes leads the ballclub in scoring at 14.1 ppg, good for 10th in the Big South. He's hitting 45.6 percent from the floor, but a dreadful 26.1 percent from three-point range and just 67.3 percent from the foul line. Troyli is also in double figures at 12.3 points per contest, hitting 41.8 percent from the floor and 77.2 percent from the foul line. Troyli is also the leading rebounder on the ballclub at 5.3 rpg. Travis Smith is sixth in the conference at 3.7 apg. The Blue Hose are shooting a solid 42.5 percent from the floor as a team, but just 32.6 percent from long range. They're averaging just 60.4 ppg, while giving up 73.8 ppg defensively. Presbyterian has also had problems with turnovers, averaging 15.9 per game.
Josh Barnes scored 18 points for Jacksonville State in the loss on Wednesday. The Gamecocks trailed 37-27 at halftime after Tennessee State shot 61.1 percent from the floor in the first half. Jacksonville State hurt itself with 18 turnovers. Trenton Marshall leads the OVC in scoring at 17.7 ppg. He's shooting 41.6 percent from the field and 36.8 percent from long range and has also been solid from the foul line at 79.2 percent. Nick Murphy is next on the scoring list at 14.2 ppg, good for ninth in the conference. He's hitting 55.5 percent from the floor. Jeremy Bynum is also in double figures at 10.4 ppg. Murphy leads the ballclub in rebounding at 7.0 rpg, third best in the conference. Dominique Shellman is third in the conference at 4.4 apg. The Gamecocks are averaging 71.0 ppg, while shooting 44.2 percent from the floor. They're shooting a respectable 37.2 percent from long range. Jacksonville State is giving up 71.3 ppg, in part because opponents are shooting 43.8 percent from the floor.
This should be little more than a walkover for Jacksonville State, which is just over a week away from the OVC Tournament.
