GAME NOTES: The Memphis Tigers will try to avenge an earlier loss to the SMU Mustangs tonight, as the two Conference USA squads come together at the FedExForum.
The Mustangs stunned Memphis, 70-60, back on January 30th to snap an eight- game losing skid in the rivalry. It was SMU's first win over Memphis since 1953, although the Tigers still own an 8-2 advantage in the all-time series.
Since that defeat, the Tigers have run off four straight conference wins to move into sole possession of second place at 9-2. Most recently, the team wrapped up a two-game road trip with a 77-64 besting of Tulane on Wednesday. It marked the Tigers' 18th straight win over Tulane, as they improved to 19-7 overall.
SMU meanwhile, has won just twice in five outings since knocking off Memphis to cap a four-game win streak. The Ponies however, are coming off one of those victories, a 67-57 triumph of Rice on Wednesday. The win snapped a short two- game slide and pushed the Mustangs to 12-13 overall and 5-6 within the conference.
The Mustangs finished strong on Wednesday, closing the game with a 12-2 run for a 67-57 win over Rice. SMU shot 45.8 percent from the floor on the night, including a 11-of-27 performance from downtown. Derek Williams headed the charge with 20 points and four helpers, while Mouhammad Faye posted 15 points and five boards. For the season, Williams paces SMU in scoring at 17.3 ppg and he is also doling out a team-high 3.5 apg. Papa Dia puts forth 12.0 ppg and a team-best 8.5 rpg for the Ponies, meanwhile, Faye tacks on 10.5 ppg and 5.3 rpg.
The Tigers connected on 56.8 percent of their attempts from the field and 8- of-18 from beyond the arc, as they pushed past Tulane on Wednesday. Leading the charge was Roburt Sallie, who posted 17 points on 4-of-7 three-pointers. Wesley Witherspoon recorded 16 points, nine boards and five steals, while Will Coleman and Elliot Williams chipped in with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Williams currently tops the roster with a healthy average of 19.2 ppg and he also adds 4.2 rpg and 3.9 apg. Witherspoon is a distant second at 12.3 ppg, while Sallie and Doneal Mack each come in with 10.7 ppg.
Memphis was caught off guard by SMU last time, but don't expect that happen tonight. The Tigers are playing well and another team effort should help them avenge the earlier loss to the Mustangs.
