GAME NOTES: The Oregon State Beavers will try to extend their recent success today, as they host the Stanford Cardinal in a Pac-10 affair at Gill Coliseum.
The Beavers may not have the best record, but they have picked up some quality wins, especially in the Pac-10. On Thursday, OSU put forth one its finest efforts of the season, tallying an 80-64 victory over league-leading California. It was the second straight win and third in four games for the Beavers, who are now 12-13 overall and 6-7 within the conference.
On the other side, Stanford is also coming off a victory, posting a 72-65 decision at Oregon on Thursday. The triumph was the first in 11 road games for the Cardinal, which improved to 12-14 overall and 6-8 in league play.
As far as the all-time series goes, OSU holds a 70-59 lead over Stanford, although the Cardinal whipped the Beavers, 59-35, last month.
The Cardinal used a 17-2 run to take control of the game in the second half, as it came away with a 72-65 decision at Oregon on Thursday. Stanford shot 45.8 percent from the floor and also went 9-of-18 from long range and 19-of-23 at the foul line. Landry Fields led the way with 21 points and six boards, while Jeremy Green finished with 18 points and three steals. For the season, Fields leads Stanford and the entire Pac-10 in scoring at 22.4 ppg and he is also ripping down a team-high 8.6 rpg. Green is another solid scorer at 17.6 ppg and he is the team's top three-point threat, hitting at a 39.8 percent rate.
The Beavers hit on 54.3 percent of their attempts from the floor and 27-of-36 at the foul line, as they scored a season-high 80 points in an upset of Cal on Thursday. OSU dominated the boards, 34-22, as well as scoring 24 points off 13 Cal turnovers. Roeland Schaftenaar went 12-of-15 at the foul line on his way to 22 points in the win, while Seth Tarver had 16 points and seven assists. Calvin Haynes chipped in with 10 points and he continues to pace the team with 12.9 ppg for the season. Tarver, an elite defender with 60 steals on the campaign, follows at 10.7 ppg and Schaftenaar contributes 9.0 ppg.
OSU has started to heat up and its tough defense and timely scoring should make the difference in a win over Stanford today.
