GAME NOTES: The Tennessee State Tigers hope to continue on the winning path as they head to Central Michigan to take on the Chippewas in a Bracketbuster event at the Rose Center.
Central Michigan is coming off of a 69-63 road loss at Ball State on Wednesday night. The loss marks the team's fourth in its last five contests, putting its record at 12-13 on the season and 7-6 in Mid-American Conference play. Before that stretch, the Chippewas were winners in four out of their previous five games.
Tennessee State is riding a four-game win streak, its longest of the season, after defeating Jacksonville State 76-57 in Ohio Valley Conference action at home on Wednesday night. Prior to winning four consecutive games, the Tigers found themselves on the losing end in seven straight.
This evening's matchup marks the second all-time battle between the two squads, with Tennessee State winning the only prior game back in 1996.
Robbie Harman and Jordan Bitzer lead the way for Central Michigan on the season, both posting 14.3 points per game. Harman gets the edge on field-goal percentage however, connecting on 41.8 percent of his shots, as Bitzer shoots 39.8 percent from the field. The Chippewas were defeated 69-63 Wednesday night at Ball State, a game in which Bitzer was the only Central Michigan performer to score in double-digits, netting 18 points. Ball State held a 36-25 advantage at the intermission after shooting 52.2 percent from the floor. The lead was pushed to 15 in the beginning of the second stanza, but Central Michigan came alive and went on a tremendous 18-0 run to take a 43-40 lead. However, the Chippewas lost control after connecting on just 38.2 percent of their shots in the second half (35.9 percent for the game), while letting their opponents shoot 48.8 percent during the affair.
Tennessee State took care of Jacksonville State 76-57 on its home court Wednesday, as Jacquan Nobles netted 18 points on the night. Martell Buie added 15 points off the bench, while Wil Peters provided a healthy 14-point effort. The Tigers shot a season-high 57.4 percent from the floor in the game, and a solid 42.0 (8-of-19) percent from beyond the arc. The defense was stellar, pressuring Jacksonville State into committing 18 turnovers in the game. Nobles leads the Tigers in scoring for active players with 11.4 ppg, followed closely by Robert Convington's 10.8 ppg. Josh Sain leads the team on the season with 13.7 ppg in 20 games this season, however he is out of action due to disciplinary reasons. On the season, the Tigers are outscored by over six points a game, netting 67.7 ppg but allowing 74.2 ppg.
Tennessee State is riding a hot hand coming off of a terrific performance on Wednesday night, but Central Michigan is a more well-rounded and talented squad, not to mention the Tigers' lackluster road record. Look for the Chippewas to put a halt to Tennessee State's winning streak this evening.
