GAME NOTES: The Towson Tigers pay a visit to the Manhattan Jaspers in the annual BracketBusters event.
The Tigers come in with a 7-19 overall ledger, which includes a 4-12 mark in Colonial Athletic Association play. The Tigers are 1-2 in their brief history in this gathering, having most recently been beaten by local rival Morgan State a year ago at home. The Tigers have suffered setbacks in two of their last three contests, including a 78-68 final at Old Dominion on Tuesday night.
As for Manhattan, it currently sits at 4-12 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, just three games ahead of lowly Marist. The Jaspers own a 9-17 tally overall, and they have dropped decisions in three of their last five outings. The squad most recently fell, 74-56, on Monday night in a home setback to Fairfield.
Today's game marks the first-ever meeting between these two programs on the hardwood.
Towson dressed just seven players for Tuesday's affair with ODU, a situation the Monarchs took full advantage of en route to their 22nd victory against the Tigers in 23 all-time meetings. The Tigers shot a respectable 46.0 percent from the floor, but were absolutely crushed in the paint by the Monarchs to the tune of a 52-28 deficit. RaShawn Polk scored 16 points to lead the Tigers' depleted ranks, while the trio of Isaiah Philmore, Robert Nwankwo and Josh Brown contributed 11 points apiece in the losing effort. The Tigers have managed to produce 67.3 ppg this season, but the club has allowed 76.2 ppg to its opponents. Calvin Lee leads the squad with 11.0 ppg, followed closely by the injured (ankle) Josh Thornton's 10.9 ppg. Nwankwo grabs a team-best 9.2 rpg in addition to netting 10.2 ppg, while Jarrel Smith rounds out the double- digit scorers with 10.0 ppg.
The Jaspers were led by Rico Pickett once again in last Mondays's loss to Fairfield, as the MAAC's leading scorer posted a game-high 18 points. Pickett has paced Manhattan 17 times this season, and this time represented the squad's only double-digits scorer as the Jaspers shot a poor 33.3 percent from the field. Pickett currently is one of two Jaspers with a double-digit scoring average, checking in at 17.8 ppg. He is joined by Darryl Crawford, who registers 14.5 ppg to go with a team-best 6.0 rpg. The club has held the opposition to 66.2 ppg this year, but has managed just 64.1 ppg at the offensive end.
With neither team setting the world on fire this season, it's hard to expect too much from either one in this matchup. The Jaspers have the homecourt advantage, so let's give them the nod.
