GAME NOTES: The UCF Knights will try to continue their recent surge, as they take on the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles in Conference USA play tonight.
The Knights have been playing well over the last couple of weeks, winning two straight and three of their past four outings. On Tuesday, UCF picked up a 68-65 win over Houston to improve to 13-12 overall and 5-6 within the conference. The Knights though, have had some struggles on the road, where they are just 2-7 this season.
As for the Eagles, they have dropped two of their last three contests on the heels of a four-game winning streak. USM was most recently edged by UAB, 59-54, on Wednesday to fall to 15-10 overall and 5-6 in conference play.
The all-time series between UCF and USM is knotted at 3-3, with the Eagles downing the Knights in the C-USA Tournament last season.
UCF shot 42.6 percent from the floor and held Houston to just a 36.5 percent effort, as it scored a three-point win earlier in the week. The Knights also made nine three-pointers, in addition to holding a 42-40 edge on the glass. Marcus Jordan turned in 18 points and eight rebounds to lead the charge, while A.J. Tyler had 12 points and eight boards. Tyler, on the season, is the lone player scoring in double figures for UCF, as he averages 10.2 ppg. Jordan though, is netting a team-high 10.7 ppg in C-USA play for the Knights and that is a nice step up from his overall season average of just 7.8 ppg.
USM stayed close on Wednesday, but UAB sunk 8-of-10 free throws over the final 2:41 to hold off the Eagles for a 59-54 decision. The Eagles shot a mediocre 40.9 percent from the floor on the night and went only 3-of-13 from long range. R.L. Horton scored 14 points to lead the team in the loss, while Gary Flowers had 11 and six boards. Flowers tops the roster in both scoring (14.7 ppg) and rebounding (7.8 rpg) and he also has a team-high 48 blocks to his credit. Ranking second to him is Maurice Bolden, who contributes 9.6 ppg and 5.9 rpg.
The Knights are playing with a lot of confidence right now, but the Eagles should still take this one behind the support of their home crowd.
