GAME NOTES: The UC Davis Aggies try to keep from recording their third straight loss tonight as they take part in the annual BracketBusters event against the Boise State Broncos at Taco Bell Arena.
UC Davis, which competes in the Big West Conference, has dropped two straight and three of its last four outings overall. The most recent game for the squad took place on Tuesday night outside of the league against Seattle University, with the Aggies suffering a lopsided 81-56 defeat.
As for the Broncos, entering the weekend tied with Hawaii for last place in the Western Athletic Conference at a mere 2-10, they've been sitting back and watching everyone compete since defeating Cal State Bakersfield at home last week, 81-62. The win snapped a three-game slide for the squad, but it didn't count towards the conference record for the Broncos which they so desperately need right now.
This bout marks the first-ever meeting on the hardwood between these two schools.
UC Davis shot just 29 percent from the field in the first half against an up- and-coming Seattle program, converting a mere 1-of-9 behind the three-point line in the frame as well, before falling in the 25-point decision. Dominic Calegari tallied 19 points, Joe Harden 15 and Todd Lowenthal accounted for a team-best 13 rebounds in the losing effort. A consistent scorer over the last few weeks for the Aggies, Calegari is responsible for a team-best 16.2 ppg based on his 42.9 percent shooting behind the three-point line. Harden steps in with 13.7 ppg and has used his play on the inside to capture a team-best seven rebounds per game, but still the team is being beaten on the glass by opponents on the average.
Needing a win to give them a jump start, the Broncos seized the opportunity against Cal State Bakersfield a few nights ago as Anthony Thomas led five players in double figures with his 15 points off the bench, followed by Robert Arnold with 14 and a team-best eight boards. Justin Salzwedel and Paul Noonan generated 12 points each and Ike Okoye 11 and six rebounds to help cover up for Daequon Montreal who made only one of his seven field goal attempts and was limited to just two points as the squad shot 57.1 percent from the floor overall and behind the three-point line. A 53.1 percent shooter from the field these days, Okoye not only leads the Broncos in scoring with 13.4 ppg, he is also the top man on the glass with better than eight and a half rebounds per game as well. La'Shard Anderson (10.5 ppg) and Arnold (10.4 ppg) try to give BSU some breathing room on offense, but for now the squad is still scoring just 0.5 ppg more than the opposition.
As long as the Broncos don't take UC Davis too lightly they should be in the running for a comfortable win tonight, just as was the case against Bakersfield last week.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
