GAME NOTES: The UNC Greensboro Spartans will be trying to end a losing streak when they tangle with The Citadel Bulldogs in a Southern Conference joust.
The Spartans were 70-65 losers at Elon at Wednesday. They've dropped five straight and six out of their last seven games. UNC Greensboro now stands at 5-21 overall and is in last place in the SoCon's North Division with a 4-11 record.
The Citadel was a 76-53 winner over Western Carolina on Thursday night. The Bulldogs are undefeated in February where they've won five straight. The Citadel is 15-12 overall and stands at 9-6 in the South Division. The Bulldogs are battling with Davidson for the third seed out of the South Division for the conference tournament.
UNCG has an 11-7 advantage in the series between the two schools. The Citadel won two meetings last season, but prior to that, the Spartans had won eight straight.
Ben Stywall scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Spartans in the loss on Wednesday. Mikko Koivisto finished with 19 points and Kendall Toney added 11. UNC Greensboro trailed 35-23 at halftime after shooting just 8-of-27 from the floor. The Spartans trailed by as many as 16 points in the second half. Stywall leads the Spartans in scoring and rebounding, averaging 14.3 ppg and 10.5 rpg. He leads the conference in scoring and is ninth in rebounding. Stywall, who is hitting 47.0 percent from the floor, is the only Spartan averaging in double figures. Kyle Randall is leading the team in assists at 2.7 apg. The Spartans have struggled shooting the basketball all season long, hitting just 38.2 percent from the floor and only 29.4 percent from outside the arc. That explains why UNC Greensboro is scoring just 63.7 ppg. The Spartans are allowing a generous 73.5 ppg defensively.
The Citadel came on strong in the second half Thursday night after trailing 33-32 at halftime. Cosmo Morabbi scored 16 points in the win. Zach Urbanus scored 14 points, while Cameron Wells added 13. Harrison DuPont recorded a double-double on the night with 12 points and 11 rebounds. The Citadel held Western Carolina to just 33.9 percent-shooting for the night. Cameron Wells paces the Bulldogs in scoring at 17.5 ppg, good for third in the conference. He's hitting 41.8 percent from the floor, but just 23.1 percent from long range. Wells is also leading The Citadel in rebounding at 5.6 rpg and is dealing out 4.1 assists, fourth-best in the conference. Urbanus is in double figures at 11.2 ppg, hitting 42.6 percent from three-point distance. The Bulldogs are converting 41.7 percent from the floor as a team, while averaging 61.9 ppg. They're giving up just 59.5 points per contest.
A team that plays tough defense is facing a team that has had offensive woes all year. It should be a recipe for success for The Citadel, as the Bulldogs will come away winners.
