GAME NOTES: The San Diego State Aztecs will try to secure a 20-win campaign tonight, as they host the Utah Runnin' Utes in Mountain West Conference play.
The Aztecs enter the bout on a roll, as they have won three straight and five of their past six outings to improve to 8-4 within the conference. On Tuesday, the team handled TCU, 68-51, as it stepped up to 19-7 overall. With a victory tonight, SDSU would lock up its school-record fifth straight 20-win season.
As for the Utes, they too come into the game on a winning note, upending UNLV, 66-61, on Wednesday. The win was the second in three games for Utah, which is now 12-13 overall and 5-6 in the MWC.
Utah leads the all-time series with SDSU, 53-14, but the Aztecs won the first meeting and are going for their first season sweep of the Utes since 1982.
The Utes buried 52.9 percent of their attempts from the floor, as they defeated UNLV earlier in the week. Utah also had its way down low, holding a 34-28 advantage on the boards and outscoring UNLV in the paint, 38-24. Carlon Brown came off the bench and led the attack with 18 points, while Marshall Henderson chipped in with 10 points. For the season, Brown tops the squad in scoring at 13.8 ppg and he is also collecting 4.4 rpg. Henderson is next in line at 12.4 ppg, while Luka Drca adds 10.1 ppg and a team-best 3.4 apg to the rotation.
The Aztecs shot a scorching 60.9 percent from the floor on Tuesday and that was plenty to down TCU on the road. SDSU won the battle on the boards, 34-24, and outscored TCU in the paint, 48-14, as well. Kawhi Leonard led the charge with an 18-point effort, while Billy White turned in 17 points and nine rebounds. On the season, Leonard nearly averages a double-double, as he paces SDSU in scoring (12.7 ppg) and rebounding (9.4 rpg). White follows with 11.0 ppg and he is a 56.7 percent shooter from the field. D.J. Gay tacks on 10.3 ppg and a team-high 3.0 apg for the Aztecs, while Malcolm Thomas produces 10.2 ppg and 8.0 rpg.
SDSU is rolling along right now and should have no trouble defeating Utah for a second time this season.
