GAME NOTES: Arkansas State will try to remain on top of the West Division in the Sun Belt Conference when the Red Wolves host the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers this evening at the Convocation Center.
The Hilltoppers storm into this matchup, riding high on a three-game winning streak. The last time Western Kentucky was on the floor the team collected a 99-69 victory over South Alabama, pushing their league ledger to 9-6 on the season.
As for the Red Wolves, they are coming off a tough, 56-54 setback to UL- Lafayette on Thursday. It was the second loss in the last three games for Arkansas State, which fell to 10-5 in conference action, placing the team in a tie for first place in the West with North Texas.
The Hilltoppers have won 27 of the 38 matchups against Arkansas State, and that includes a 79-68 victory over the Red Wolves earlier this month.
The Hilltoppers exploded on Thursday night against South Alabama, as Western Kentucky poured in 99 points, en route to a 30-point victory. WKU shot a sizzling 53.1 percent from the floor and also connected on 14-of-32 attempts from behind the arc. AJ Slaughter erupted in the win with 31 points and also dished out six assists, while Sergio Kerusch added a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds. Steffphon Pettigrew also posted 13 points, while Jeremy Evans and Jordan Swing tallied 11 points apiece. Slaughter has been the top player on the floor for WKU, as the guard is netting 17.7 ppg, to go along with a team-high 122 assists. Pettigrew is contributing 14.8 ppg and 6.1 rpg, while Kerusch is helping out with 13.6 ppg and 6.7 rpg.
The Red Wolves put forth a terrible effort in their recent loss to UL- Lafayette, as the team shot just 41.5 percent from the floor, en route to a 54-point performance. Not one player posted double figures in the loss, as Martavius Adams led the way with nine points and 16 rebounds. Leading the way on the year for Arkansas State has been Brandon Reed, who is netting 14.7 ppg. As for Adams, he is contributing 11.2 ppg, and is also collecting 7.3 rpg. As a whole the Red Wolves have not been overwhelming offensively, as the team is producing just 69.7 ppg.
The Red Wolves were ineffective in their last matchup, but should play better at home this evening. However, the Hilltoppers have been sensational since Kerusch returned to the lineup and should continue to remain in the win column.
