Winthrop (15-10) at Eastern Kentucky (18-10)

GAME NOTES: The Winthrop Eagles put their seven-game win streak on the line when they step out of conference to take on the Eastern Kentucky Colonels in a BracketBusters matchup tonight at McBrayer Arena.

Winthrop enters the game in search of an eight consecutive victory, a streak that began back on January 23rd. The Eagles were in action on Tuesday night, posting a 69-64 victory over Gardner-Webb. With three games remaining on their Big South Conference schedule, the Eagles have climbed to second place in the league standings, just one game back of first-place Coastal Carolina.

But picking up a win tonight won't be easy against an Eastern Kentucky squad that is 13-1 at home. However, the Colonels have lost two straight following a four-game win streak earlier this month. They stand at 18-10 overall and 10-6 in the Ohio Valley Conference, with two regular-season games remaining after tonight.

This marks the third meeting all-time between these two schools, and Winthrop has won the previous two matchups.

Leading the way for Winthrop on Tuesday night was guard Reggie Middleton, who scored all 18 of his points in the second half after getting into early foul trouble. Matt Morgan scored 17 and grabbed six rebounds, while Robbie Dreher tallied 12 points and eight assists in the win. The Eagles shot a dismal 8- of-32 (.250) from the floor in the first half and trailed 24-22 at the break. But they more than doubled that output with 47 second-half points, 21 of which came from the foul line. Winthrop also out-rebounded Gardner-Webb by nine boards, including a key 15-8 edge on the offensive glass. The Eagles' seven- game win streak is a bit surprising, considering they don't have a single player averaging double figures on the year. Middleton is scoring a team-best 9.5 ppg, as Winthrop is shooting just 37.9 percent as a team.

Scoring has not been a problem for the Colonels, who boast a potent trio that has been in the starting lineup together for every game this season. Justin Stommes leads the way with 14.3 ppg behind 52.1 percent shooting from the floor. Rounding out that trio are Josh Taylor (13.4 ppg) and Papa Oppong (10.9 ppg). Those three have combined to knock down an impressive 169-of-410 (.412) three-pointers on the year. However, the Colonels have cooled a bit lately and are averaging only 59 points over their past three outings. Against Morehead State on Wednesday, EKU trailed 45-25 at halftime and went on to shoot just 36.8 percent for the game. MSU also held a 45-28 rebounding advantage, including a 16-8 edge on the offensive boards. Taylor led the Colonels with 21 points, though he was the team's only double-digit scorer on the night.

The Colonels have certainly had their struggles of late, but returning home after a three-game road trip to face a non-league foe, could be just what the doctor ordered.
