GAME NOTES: The Duquesne Dukes take aim at their first three-game win streak since opening the season with four consecutive victories, as they challenge the Dayton Flyers in an Atlantic 10 Conference bout today at the A.J. Palumbo Center in Pittsburgh.
Duquesne, which has just three games left on the regular-season schedule after this weekend, defeated the Charlotte 49ers last Wednesday in an 83-77 final, the team's third win in the last four outings to draw to within two games of .500 in the A-10 at 5-7.
As for the Flyers, currently 7-4 in league action, they easily handled the La Salle Explorers on Thursday night with a 68-54 decision at home to push themselves to an impressive 13-1 in their own building this season.
Dayton won the first meeting of the campaign by a score of 78-72 at home back on January 9th, leading the Flyers to a commanding 43-19 advantage in the all- time series.
The Flyers spread the wealth three nights ago, as Marcus Johnson came off the bench to lead all scorers with his 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field. Chris Wright added 12 points as the only starter to score in double figures for Dayton. Although, there was Chris Johnson who tallied nine points and matched reserves Devin Searcy and Josh Benson in the scoring column. Wright is at the top of the scoring list for the Flyers overall this season with his 14.7 ppg, one of only two players to have started all 25 games along with Kurt Huelsman who is limping along at 3.8 ppg. Chris Johnson is responsible for 12.2 ppg and is just ahead of Wright in the rebounding department with his 7.5 boards per contest. As good as Wright and Chris Johnson may be, the fact remains that between the two of them they have delivered a mere 42 assists and have turned the ball over 92 times.
Trailing by 10 points in the second half against Charlotte, the Dukes put together a 16-1 run to push themselves ahead and into the win column with a six-point victory. B.J. Monteiro paced Duquesne with 19 points, while Bill Clark hit four three-pointers as he contributed 18 to the attack and gave the Dukes their first win on the home floor of a North Carolina institution since 1937. Damian Saunders accounted for 11 points and four assists but, more importantly, was credited with six blocked shots. Saunders, who has scored in double figures in all but three games this season, is averaging 14.8 ppg and is also clearing close to 12 rpg to keep him close with the best in basketball. Additionally, Saunders is also blocking three and a half shots per outing and making almost three steals per game, making him one of the most dynamic players in the A-10. Clark (14.0 ppg) and Monteiro (11.0 ppg) have had some of the pressure taken off them with the return of Melquan Bolding (12.2 ppg).
Having Saunders in the paint works for the Dukes at both ends of the floor and few opponents have been able to handle him and his teammates at the same time.
