GAME NOTES: Pete Hanna Arena in Birmingham, Alabama is the site of tonight's Southern Conference tussle between the Georgia Southern Eagles and the Samford Bulldogs.
On Saturday, the Eagles had their wings clipped in overtime by Wofford, as they fell to the Terriers in an 82-76 final. It was the fifth loss in the last six games for Georgia Southern, which is winless in 15 road games this year.
As for the Bulldogs, they picked up a 60-54 victory over Chattanooga in their last contest. It was the second win in the last three games for Samford, which is just 5-10 in conference action, and 11-16 on the year.
The Eagles own a comfortable 31-15 series edge over Samford, but last year the Bulldogs snapped a five-game skid against Georgia Southern by posting a 69-46 victory.
The Eagles fought hard on Saturday, but they did not have enough steam and in the end fell to Wofford in overtime. Georgia Southern shot a respectable 45.2 percent from the floor and finished 7-of-17 from beyond the arc. Rory Spencer led the Eagles with 19 points and seven boards, while Ben Drayton and Antonio Hanson scored 15 and 14 points, respectively. Willie Powers chimed in with 12 points and seven assists. Powers have been the best player on the floor for GSU throughout the season and he is netting 14.9 ppg to go along with 5.0 apg. Hanson is the only other GSU player on the floor averaging double figures, as the guard is netting 11.9 ppg. On the season, the team is putting up 69.2 ppg, but what has hurt the Eagles has been their terrible play defensively, as foes are turning in nearly 79 ppg.
The Bulldogs were far from impressive in their last matchup, but they did just enough to get past Chattanooga by a six-point margin. Samford shot 40 percent from the floor, but used an 11-of-31 clip from three-point range to help capture the win. Trey Montgomery led the way with 19 points, while Jeffrey Merritt tallied 18 points and nine rebounds. Josh Davis lent a hand with 16 points and six boards in the victory. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs have shown very little bite offensively this season, and they come into this clash averaging just 57.7 ppg. Davis leads the team with 13.0 ppg, while Montgomery contributes 11.1 ppg and has dished out 77 assists.
The Bulldogs might not dominate this game offensively, but look for them to use a tenacious brand of defense to limit what the Eagles have planned.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
