GAME NOTES: The top-ranked Kansas Jayhawks continue to steamroll toward the NCAA Tournament, and they are set to host the struggling Oklahoma Sooners in a Big 12 Conference game this evening.
Oklahoma has suffered four consecutive losses to fall to 13-13 overall and 4-8 in league play, and it has become obvious that the Sooners may need to win the Big 12 Tournament to earn their ticket to the "Big Dance". The Sooners are coming off an 83-68 loss to Kansas State on Saturday in front of a deflated home crowd, and they carry a 1-7 record in true road games into this evening's affair.
As for Kansas, it opened the season with 14 consecutive wins before finally tasting defeat at Tennessee. Since that setback, the Jayhawks have run off 12 straight victories to move to 26-1 overall and a perfect 12-0 in the Big 12. They crushed Colorado on Saturday by a 94-74 final and are a perfect 17-0 at home this season.
Kansas owns a 134-64 series lead over Oklahoma, which includes five straight wins over the Sooner.
The strength of the Oklahoma team is its backcourt, as both Willie Warren and Tommy Mason-Griffin are capable of taking over a game at the offensive end. Warren is averaging 16.3 ppg this season, while Mason-Griffin checks in with 14.0 ppg and 118 assists. Tony Crocker provides 11.6 ppg, and Tiny Gallon brings 10.1 ppg and 8.1 rpg to the mix. There is a fifth double-digit scorer in the fold for the Sooners, as Cade Davis nets 10.0 ppg. Oklahoma is generating 73.3 ppg, but the team is allowing 72.9 ppg to opponents. In the 15-point home loss to Kansas State over the weekend, Mason-Griffin finished with 16 points and five assists. Shaky defense was the most obvious reason for the setback, as the Sooners allowed the Wildcats to shoot 53.3 percent from the floor. Also, Oklahoma was outscored 23-12 off turnovers.
There is a wealth of talent on the roster for Kansas, as it is loaded for a run at a second national title in three years. The Jayhawks are led by Sherron Collins, a standout guard who is averaging 15.0 points and 4.3 assists per game. Xavier Henry, a standout freshman, provides 13.6 ppg, and Marcus Morris adds 12.8 ppg. As for Cole Aldrich, the club's star center, he provides 11.6 points and 10.1 caroms per contest to complement 103 blocks. Kansas is generating 82.7 ppg while allowing 62.9 ppg on 36.7 percent shooting from the field to its opponents. The fact that the Jayhawks are outrebounding foes by 7.6 rpg has been key to the team's success thus far. Against Colorado in the most recent outing, Henry exploded for 24 points in 29 minutes, while Aldrich and Tyshawn Taylor tallied 17 points apiece. Aldrich also registered 10 rebounds and five blocks, while Taylor handed out six assists. Kansas connected on 54.7 percent of its field goal attempts in that outing.
Kansas will continue its perfect run through the Big 12 with a win over Oklahoma tonight. The Jayhawks have to be viewed as the favorite to cut down the nets this season.
