GAME NOTES: Two teams headed in opposite directions come together at Freedom Hall tonight, as the Louisville Cardinals host the 11th-ranked Georgetown Hoyas.
The Cardinals' NCAA Tournament hopes were in jeopardy until a recent run, as the team has won three straight and five of its past six outings. Included in that charge was a 66-60 upset of then second-ranked Syracuse and a more recent 68-59 victory at DePaul on Saturday. Louisville is now 9-5 within the conference and a third place finish is within reach.
Georgetown on the other hand, was competing for a Big East title just a few weeks ago. The Hoyas are now no longer in the running, as they are 8-6 in the conference after going just 3-4 over their past seven outings. Two of the losses during that stretch came to a highly-ranked Syracuse squad, including a 75-71 setback on Thursday. Losers of two straight, the Hoyas are still a solid 18-7 overall, but in need of a win to regain some confidence.
The Hoyas lead the head-to-head series with Louisville, 5-4, although the Cardinals picked up a 76-58 victory in last season's meeting.
Georgetown rallied from a 23-point second-half deficit to pull within a point at 71-70, but couldn't grab the lead in what ended up being a 75-71 loss to Syracuse last week. Jason Clark missed a go-ahead jumper with 42 seconds left for the Hoyas and Syracuse's Kris Joseph converted a bucket on the ensuing possession with nine seconds remaining to seal the win for the Orange. Austin Freeman guided the team in defeat with 21 points and six boards, while Chris Wright and Greg Monroe each had 20 points. For the season, Freeman heads the Hoyas in the scoring department at 17.0 ppg and he shoots 46.1 percent from three-point range. Monroe, the team's leading rebounder at 9.4 rpg, adds 15.7 ppg to the mix and he even dishes out 3.6 apg. Wright, meanwhile, produces 14.4 ppg and a team-best 3.8 apg, and Clark chips in with 10.7 ppg for the Hoyas.
The Cardinals shot a solid 49.0 percent from the floor and made 12-of-17 free throws on their way to a 68-59 win over DePaul this past weekend. Louisville had 18 assists on 25 field goals and held a 35-27 advantage on the boards as well. Samardo Samuels led the way with 14 points, while Edgar Sosa checked in with 13 points and seven assists. The duo are the lone double-digit scorers on the season for the Cardinals and they are combining for 29 of the team's 78.3 ppg average. Samuels tops the club with 16.1 ppg and 7.1 rpg, meanwhile, Sosa delivers 12.9 ppg to go with a team-high 4.3 apg.
Louisville is starting to peak and playing at home should only help the Cardinals add to the Hoyas' recent struggles tonight.
