GAME NOTES: The 19th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers and Florida Gators are set to do battle in what figures to be a hard-fought SEC clash.
Tennessee is clearly overshadowed by Kentucky in the SEC, but the Volunteers have won their last two games and five of the last six to move to 8-4 in conference. They have reached the 20-win plateau (20-6), and they are coming off a 63-55 decision over South Carolina on Saturday.
Like Tennessee, Florida is 8-4 against SEC opponents, and the Gators can earn their 20th win tonight with a strong effort. They are considered by some to be "on the bubble" in regard to the upcoming NCAA Tournament, and a victory over the Vols would be huge. Florida has won its last two outings, including a 64-61 decision over Ole Miss on Saturday.
The Vols edged the Gators by a 61-60 final in a thriller last month, and Tennessee owns a 69-48 series advantage over Florida.
Wayne Chism has emerged as the leading scorer for Tennessee this season, as he is netting 13.1 ppg to go along with 7.2 rpg and 39 blocks. Scotty Hopson is the only other active double-digit scorer on the roster with his 12.7 ppg, and the Vols are generating 75.3 ppg this season while permitting 64.7 ppg to their opponents. Tennessee is holding its foes to 39.1 percent shooting, as Bruce Pearl's team takes great pride in its strong defensive play. Against South Carolina on Saturday, Bobby Maze came through with 14 points to pace the Vols, who shot a respectable 48.8 percent from the floor. Clearly, Tennessee benefited from a 40-30 rebounding advantage and a 19-10 edge in points from the foul line. The club was also able to hold the Gamecocks to just 31.7 percent shooting.
Florida boasts five double-digit scorers on the roster, and Kenny Boynton leads the way with 13.5 ppg, while Erving Walker adds 13.0 ppg. Walker has also dished out 139 assists to go along with 39 steals, but both he and Boynton are shooting under 37 percent from the field. Alex Tyus, who has made good on 51.3 percent of his field goal attempts to date, provides 12.5 ppg and 7.0 rpg, while Chandler Parsons pitches in 11.4 ppg and 7.0 rpg. Vernon Macklin nets 10.3 ppg for the Gators, who are posting 71.8 ppg while allowing 64.3 ppg. Macklin scored 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the floor against Ole Miss on Saturday, and Parsons pitched in with 13 points. The Gators made good on a mere 36.5 percent of their field goal attempts, including 1-of-13 from three-point range, but a 25-9 advantage in points from the foul line proved to be the difference.
Florida will get revenge for the one-point loss to Tennessee in the earlier meeting. Expect a balanced offensive attack for the Gators to be the difference.
