Virginia (14-11) at Miami-Florida (17-9)

GAME NOTES: The hapless Virginia Cavaliers have suffered five consecutive defeats and will attempt to end the slide tonight when they pay a visit to the Miami-Florida Hurricanes.

Virginia hasn't won a game in three weeks, and the club has dropped to 5-7 in ACC play, overshadowing a respectable 14-11 overall record. The Cavaliers fell to 2-6 in true road affairs with a 72-49 loss to Clemson on Saturday.

As for Miami, it can certainly empathize with Virginia's recent struggles, as the Hurricanes have lost their last two games and four of the last five to plummet to 3-9 in conference. The 'Canes have beaten all 14 of their non- league opponents this season, but a 15-1 start to the campaign now seems a distant memory. The most recent outing for Miami took place last Wednesday and resulted in an 81-74 loss to Duke.

Virginia beat up on Miami in a 75-57 final last month, but the Hurricanes still own a 6-4 advantage in the all-time series between the two teams.

The 49 points scored against Clemson on Saturday tied a season-low for the Cavaliers, who shot just 35 percent from the floor in that tilt, including a 2-of-13 showing from three-point range. They were outscored 12-5 from the foul line and permitted the Tigers to shoot 51.9 percent from the field. Mike Scott tallied 14 points in defeat to pace the Cavs. Sylven Landesberg scored 13 points, and Sammy Zeglinski posted 11 points and eight rebounds. Landesberg is scoring 17.0 ppg this season to go along with 72 assists, and Scott provides 13.4 ppg and 7.4 rpg. A 52.7 percent shooter from the floor, Scott is much more consistent than flashy. Virginia is generating 67.2 ppg while limiting opponents to 62.8 ppg, but the team is being outscored by 2.2 ppg in ACC action.

Dwayne Collins scored 21 points for Miami against Duke last week, and he also ripped down nine rebounds. Durand Scott added 19 points, and James Dews chipped in with 16. The Hurricanes shot 55.6 percent from the floor, but 22 turnovers led to the setback. They actually led the game by 12 points at intermission before falling apart defensively over the final 20 minutes. Dews is scoring 12.3 ppg on 40.5 percent shooting from three-point range, and Collins adds 12.0 ppg and 8.1 rpg through 26 contests. The Hurricanes are generating 73.1 ppg while holding opponents to 64.2 ppg, but the numbers are nearly reversed in conference games, as Miami is posting only 65.7 ppg while permitting 72.3 ppg.

Miami will earn a split in the season series with Virginia by disposing of the Cavaliers tonight. Expect the Hurricanes to lead from start to finish.
